I need something quite cheap for me to play with until I collect some money to get something good.

how cheap?

Sigma 70-300 APO or Canon 55-250IS

Cheaper - Tamron 70-300 or Sigma 70-300 DG MACRO. However the small additional expense to the next level up is worth it.

As close as possible to £100 would be ideal (for a used one )but I might be able to stretch some more.

100-300mm Canon
cheap as cheap without being the bottom of the range and no IS. the old basic 75-300 were okay for general use but the 100-300 just has better build quality and is slightly more for your money.

for more money.
70-300 sigma APO
55-250 IS canon, which is apparently rather nice
and my fave on a budget, 70-300 IS canon, budget being 300-400 notes of course

Can you please clarify which model you are referring to? When I search I only get the Sigma ones as well as one that is more expensive than the sigma: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/4.5-5.6-USM_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ200352944545QQsalenotsu pported

You can get that second one new on here from Kerso. Worth checking it out. The really shallow DOF makes it tricky to use, if your up close, forget focus and reframe, but it does get some good results for very little money... as for the Telephoto.. I can't comment on the Sigma, but I've heard lots of good things about. I have the EFS 55-250 IS and it's a cracking lens for the money and the IS is really worth it.

I got the 100-300 here http://www.warehouseexpress.com/product/default.aspx?sku=12856 second hand on ebay for just over £100 a year or two back. Prices have gone up since then, but it performed well in good light.

A tripod would help you with this lens. It will also give you a good idea re focal lenghs for wildlife you might want inthe future.

Good luck

Al

I paid £90 for the APO version of the Sigma.
Would the Canon really be worth the extra £50?

I have the 70-300APO and was disappointed at first. Then a chance chat with one of the guys at Mifsuds suggested a minimum shutter speed of 1/500 or above.

Low and behold, even increasing the ISO so I can get 1/400 has improved things no end. For the money, am liking it now :D

Are you in a hurry? If not, I'd save up to buy a good lens one time instead of buy, sell, buy, sell,... But that is just me :)

I just ordered another lens as a present to be used by the family.
I got a good deal for a wide angle Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 for shooting landscapes.

So now I got the following:
Lenses update:
1. Canon 18-55 IS
2. Sigma 70-300 DG APO
3. Pentacon 50mm f/1.8 manual focus
4. Canon EF 28mm f/2.8
5. Canon EF 38-76mm

Any suggestions on how the above should best be used (what subjects I should shoot with each?).
