I would like to know if its worth buying an SD to CF card adapter and using SD cards in my camera as the Sandisk cards are far cheaper in SD format and will I experience any time lag when shooting at max fps like write times or download times to the PC

Could be a cheaper way of getting some 8 or 16gb sandisk IVs:thinking:

Do you experience that much of a difference using Extreme IV's? Personally, I wouldn't bother with an adapter and just use Extreme III' CF's or similar.

I agree, unless of course your shooting a lot of sport shot's but even then with the extreme 3 the 30mb type, there can't be much in it :shrug:

I havent even used sandisk yet I just use Transcend and havent had a problem with them I just thought it may be a cheaper way of having some top storage:thumbs:

Unless you have a need for superfast transfer, there is nothing wrong with Extreme III's if you want 'top storage' as you put it. :) As TG stated, the 30MB/s transfer rate is more than fast enough for most situations.

EDIT: I just checked out the CF card prices on Amazon, the Extreme IV cards are twice the price of the Extreme III cards.

EDIT 2: Can you even get SDHC Extreme IV cards? I could only find Extreme III's...

the difference is about a third of the price af a cf card but the adapter is 30quid so 1 cf and the adapter is much cheaper than 1 8gb cf

Extreme III's were great when I was using D2x, but with the D3x I decided that any additional transfer speed had to be a good thing... So 2x 8Gb cards per camera it is, plus 4 spares in the bag along with all my 'old' 4Gb, 2Gb and 512Mb cards - I think there's even a 256Mb card in there somewhere...lol
To be honest, I've always bought these things when they first came out, so I've never benefitted from them dropping in price as faster cards were developed...

Going back to the OP's question, I think the camera speed also depends on how quickly it can clear the buffer. I bought my 30D in South Africa and my dealer, a pro wildlife photographer and thoroughly decent guy, strongly recommended the Ultra II cards. He had all the Extreme III and IV cards in stock but reckoned there wasn't any useful difference unless you were using a ID camera (or other manufacturers equivalent). That's worked well enough for me so far. Other people may have had different experiences.

I'm currently using a Sandisk reader, or my wife's no name reader, to download to her ageing PC. I'm sure it doesn't have USB 2.0 connectivity, but a 4 Gig card seems to download pretty briskly. Again, I wouldn't throw any more money at this right now.

For a cheap-ass one which will slow the transfer speed down considerably. I've got one and the performance is appalling.

You can get faster ones which have less impact but they're around £30-40 and thus negate much of the benefit of buying SD in the first place.

i use SD cards instead of CF now in my 1D, mainly due to ease of loading it on my laptop as it has a memory card reader built in.
