would any of you lot know if it'd be safe to put a sb800 onto the top of my 1d? i gather i wouldnt be able to use the ttl, but i dont tend to much anyway

I wouldn't but you could use the PC input on the flash with it off camera? I think?
good idea, unfortuantly im lacking a pc cord, any other ideas?

Not really. You need to use a lead and or a trigger device. I know a ST-E2 will fire a Nikon speedlight. EDIT: Assuming the SB800 will work as an IR slave.
I use a photocell to fire a non-standard flash in my set-up. Too stingy to replace my old 540EZ! :lol:
