Hi,

I finally got out with the camera for the first time over the xmas break, the local Speedway track were having a short course meeting with some of the British Superbike guys attending so I decided to go have a look. The light was poor but I'm quite pleased with some of the shots, this was my first use of my monopod and all were taken with the EF 70-200 at varying ISO's (100-800).

Steve Plater this years winner of the Macau GP was there along with John McGuiness the fast man ever, around the Isle of Man TT. They must be hard up or bored to come to a small dirt track on a wet and windy day in Scunthorpe :)

Nice stuff there Andy - I remember reading in the speedway Star that Scunny wanted to do something through the winter - they were opriginally intending to do a standard speedway meeting but weren't granted a license IIRC.

I'm very impressed with the shots you've done looking directly up the straight - not an easy angle to shoot from on a speedway track!

Three and four are excellent as are the portraits.

I tip my hat to you :)

Thanks for all your comments, I really enjoyed taking these and learnt a lot especially about shooting in manual in lowering light.

I found I had to shoot up the track mostly, otherwise the inner fencing got in the way like this:

I could have done with a longer lens really.

My favourite is the Neil Hodgson portrait, I'd just finished attaching my flash when I saw him wandering across the pits, someone shouted him just as I took the photo hence him looking over his shoulder.

Some very good captures - got to say I think the non-racing shots are where you excelled though, really like some of the candids you got off the track, particularly #9 & #10 :D

Good to see the new lens peforming

Yes, I know exactly the problem! Some tracks it's not too bad - you can get nice and high up and shoot looking down on the action (which has its own problems!) but Scunny's quite flat it appears. If shooting from the terracing looking down I only ever touch my 70-300 lens, and then at between 200 - 300mm only - nothing shorter.
