View Full Version : Double standards ????
dont get me wrong, i dont mind large pictures on my large screen,
but some newcomers and others have been ' requested ' to reduce the size of their pix so peeps with smaller screens can see em, while other peeps( i dont want to mention names , its not why i'm making the comment ) put up large panoramic pics and nothing gets mentioned,
just think the rules/requests should apply to all ??
or have no restrictions of image sizes ??

Your point is valid sir and you will find the admin team agree 100% however it is not as simple as that. As you are aware the site and forums are a new venture, we are finding our feet and trying to make the place friendly and fair to everyone. Some of our members are more familiar with forums and their rules than others, with that it can bring problems. Some forums, like ours have size limits for images and others don’t. The members come here and don’t read the rules then we contact them after one post or edit their post and it looks bad on everyone and stifles the forums growth. It is a delicate balancing act. We have (in the last week) contacted some people by PM and suggested in replies to their posts that they take note of the guidelines and rules. Yesterday I personally broke a link in one members post due to the image being larger than the allowed limit.
We have also recently posted a few polite reminders and notices around the forum to gently nudge members to act responsibly and stay within the rules. The perceived double standards come about due to the admin having much to do behind the scenes and not all of our actions are visible. With the recent posts to remind people you will also find that the admin team will back it up with actions. Each “infringement” will be treated individually though and sometimes the actions that we take will not be seen by everyone.
With regards to panoramic shots..again you are right and the member of whom you talk about has also recently been reminded of the rules. Panoramic shots are a little different by design though, as to get a feel for them you need to have it displayed at a large width that will usually be outside our guidelines. Obviously posting a smaller image and offering a link to a larger version is the ideal and correct way to approach this but we are not ogres and will accept warnings in thread titles if image sizes are going to exceed the rules. This will only be tolerated occasionally and in instances like I have just described. We will not allow anyone to abuse the system or the forums and intend to tread everyone fairly.
Hopefully you can appreciate the whole situation and see that we are trying to be fair rather than allow double standards. We aware of this and will be vigilant in monitoring and enforcing the rules.
BTW its a nice spoon
thanks for your detaild response,
i agree fully with your comments and do appreciate the efforts made by the admin team as i was a moderator on the mondeo forum for 18 months b4 a cull was made, lol
i was just acting as a voice for those who may have had similar thought to myself but didnt want to use their spoon
its a great site and i hope it continues to grow in quality in the way it has started out,

Personally I think it's the file size rather than the image size thats the killer if you're on 56k. I think practically everyone has at least a 17" monitor these days so perhaps the 600pixel rule could be relaxed for panoramics.

That’s a fair comment, we have relaxed the rule slightly in the last two days and now allow up to 700pixels across the longest side. However since this subject has been raised once again, we are now discussing the current situation and looking at the rule options. Watch this space..

Take a peek HERE (http://www.thephotographyforums.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16) for the current situation regarding image sizes.
We as a forum are still evolving and smoothing things out, so please be patient and have a look at the general rules on bits and bobs section every once in a while.
If you have suggestions on how we can improve YOUR forum experience let us know, it's only BOD who bites....;)

Only if you pay me. I still haven't been paid for the last time. So these gnashers are stayin firmly closed until debts are paid :p
I personally find large pics where the text scrolls off the side of the screen the problem(which I've seen a couple of time of here), rather than the pic size itself. I think there should be a relaxation for panoramics but to an limited extent rather than a free for all.
BTW, I run 1280x1024 on a 19" monitor!
Thanks
the way the software works means that it SHOULD wrap to the screen size fixed by the template, ie, how big i made it, i made it fit most screens so its only large pictures that fowl the layout, this should be none-existant now except for panaramics!
... and you need to be consistent on how you deal with pics that are oversize....

As will I if they are new to the forum, however I am getting a bit sick of having to chase the regulars for the sizes of the pictures posted and have now taken to breaking the links and posting to say that it was me. I have no problem reading rules and don't see why others fail to do so. It is not rocket science.
Be tough, be hard, make those suckers bleed! ahem :)

Agreed. The regulars should know better... :)

Its all so easily avoided if a Gallery is taken up!
Its free after all....and with the gallery remote upload tool, its drag and drop simple.

Cool, but how do you delete, rename etc - PM if you deem that more appropriate. I seem to remember reading it somewhere but couldn't find it!
you cant rename with remote, only upload, but as that is loads easier to upload it makes loggin in and changing it so much less hassle...
i will pm the details m8
