UV filters

I want to protect my lenses that is why I want one! I am only a novice and thought that asking a question would be the best way of trying to get one I know it is an obvious question but thought that someone on here may now of some good deals! :shrug:

I think V8burble not expanding upon his comment may have given the wrong impression.

There is a view, and I subscribe to it, that current multicoating does away with the need for a UV or skylight filter, and in most cases using a filter for protection can degrade an image. I always fit a lens hood, this stops the front element getting knocked. If I was walking with the camera out of its bag in an area where the lens might get poked by hedge branches, I'd simply put the lens cap on. Not using a filter to protect also makes it easier to fit a polarising filter when needed, less fiddling about removing one filter to fit another. The only time I'd consider using a uv filter for protection is in adverse conditions, for extreme dust or saltwater spray. The last filters I bought were Hoya, I've always found them good, but I've also heard good things about the kenko pro 1 range.

Yes I am going to adverse weather conditions (extreme dust) that is why I wanted to try and protect my lenses.

I do use a lense hood also but just covering all aspects.

If that's the case, then a UV filter is a good idea (I don't like them unless they're necessary - dust, spray etc), but remember that image quality will be affected by the cheapest bit of glass in the way of the light.... So if you've got some good lenses, then you're sticking a £5 bit of window glass in front of it, there'll be little point in a good lens!

The top end Hoyas are as good as they get, Pro1 or HD range. Good prices on Amazon.

In that case... Yes please fit one.
As said by Steve, I normally use the lens hood for protection, but dust and sand etc is another 'kettle of fish' as they say (for some reason) :)

Don't get Canon, they're rebranded cheap Tiffen filters. You'd be better off sticking some cling-film over the front.
