Welcome to Round 1 of the TP : Photographer of the Year 2007.

As usual, the competition rules are here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=15325).

Any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please use this thread to discuss the competition, and specifically the current round, and your interpretation of it. Also feel free to discuss ideas and thoughts etc. :) While there is an anonymous nature to the submissions and voting, there's no need to be secretive about ideas and the like. While we'd all like to win :D...the competition is for all of us to help improve our photography :)

So, on with this months theme, which is LINES

The cut off for submissions to be received is 23:59 on the 31st January 2007

The winner of this round will receive an a4 or a3 sized print of their winning shot.

So was it decided to stick with the scores = votes, or a fixed number pof points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc ?

new thread on scoring coming shortly, but basically you pm your top 3 to round runner, then through the magic of spreadsheet, points are awarded to the top 10 placed shots...

Ooh ... so many ideas flooding my grey matter ... just gotta try and turn them into reality ...

As it is the first of a new POTY competition and even though winning will not be the aim for me ... I am hoping to give this a regular go ... and take part in all the fun of the comp ... and see whether this new scoring mallarkey really works ... :D

What about the themes list? thought the Vote thats winning was to give all 12 themes up front???

matty
07-01-2007, 10:01
no the vote was discarded at around page 6, we would have been here all week trying to sort it it all out otherwise

Keltic Ice Man

Matty - was it decided in the end that it had to be a shot taken betwix the first and last days of the comp?

(lost the will to live in the other thread)

Technically no....as long as it hasn't seen airing on these forums :) (Or on the front page of Time magazine etc :D)

The aim of the competition is to improve your photography, so it is preferred if you submit a photo taken specifically for the competition. However, we will accept older shots that have not previously been used.

antc
16-01-2007, 20:37
when emailing the shot to the competition email adress do we need to include the details of who took the shot in that mail. i know this seems like a really silly questions but it doesnt state this in the rules. just a little unclear on the anonymous side of the images being sent in/put up for voting side of things.

Well I set mine up last weekend spent over an hour getting everything ready took about 50 shots was reasonably pleased with what I saw in camera. Took everything down uploaded shots and I wast at ISO1600!!!!!!!!!!! So all the shots are crap and I gotta set it all up for this weekend again.

There was nothing unlucky about that Jimmy it was plain stupidity!

That was my initial idea to namllihs but I figured it wouldn't go over too well with the family crowd so went back to the drawing board!

30-01-2007, 19:22
I agree, voting for your own shot is not 'in the spirit' of what the competition should be about.

Even if there is not a rule, hope people will be sensible about this. I would love to have people admiring my shots, but not win at all costs.

My original idea was to have an old table with a piece of paper with actual lines on it that said "I must take more photographs" or something to that effect. Maybe even a quill pen but I haven't had the time or energy to sort it out.

Its going to have to be something architectural now I think.

My first thought was a child doing lines on a blackboard. To my shock i was told they dont have blackboards anymore and, furthermore, if i lurked around schools at detention time, i'd find myself detained in a more permanent way

Matt Charlton
31-01-2007, 14:25
Yeah schools don't have blackboards, they have whiteboards and electronic whiteboards.

whiteboard markers are cheaper and less messier than chalk. Plus instead of the awful chalk noise you get squeeky marker noise.

A lot of schools (older ones) are only changing in the last few years, my school was a new build and we had whiteboards in from 1992 when I started (at 11 years of age)

crap - I'm older than I thought! I'd finished A levels by then (with blackboards) and although I was drunk most of the time, I'm fairly sure we didn't have new fangled stuff for my degree either.........:'( :'( :'(

Matt Charlton
02-02-2007, 08:37
Can either be server or service.

Basically in a nutshell its what ties talkphotography to its ip address of 80.253.108.209.

You see the internet works with ip addresses but we can't be expected to remember them all so DNS allows us to type in words rather than an ip address.

If you change where the website is then the ip address of the site changes because each computer/server that hosts websites has its own ip address (or sometimes multiple ones but we won't go into that here). So basically it can take up to 24 hours for the changes to update across the internet and the problem we had was that talkphotography.co.uk wasn't pointing to the right ip address everywhere.

Thats one of the jobs it does anway ;)

Think that was the assignments that we could see the votes in Janice.

The comps to my recollection have always been by private vote. I think this is a good idea as no one is then swayed by the majority vote.

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Is voteing still going to close on the 7th?
When will this months theme be announced?

So far I have 45 favourites and I'm finding it very difficult to narrow them down to my top 3. It's going to take a while to then put them in 1st 2nd + 3rd place.

Well done to everyone.

Can I put my name down for the 2008 calendar? I missed this years. :bang:

February's theme is already up - it is "Still LIfe". I would assume we have 7 days from today for voting as is normal.

Richmond - I can't answer all your Qs but you don't need to place your 3 - just select your 3 favs, no order! Still hard though!

you need to send your 3 choices in preference order

How to vote : Please send the numbers of your favourite 3 photos, in preference order, by Private Message to the member of staff running the competition (This will be made clear in each months thread)

some outstanding entries really make it hard this month though!

Voting will end next sunday, only this once though to make up for all the messing about

Just a quick question, why do we need to send them in preference order?
I thought that if we just voted for our favourite three, then the one with the most votes got 10 points, second place got 9, and so on?

the top 3 go into a spreadsheet and points awarded for first second third etc..

So if someone votes with their favourite three in order, the one they vote for at number 1 gets more points than the other two?

Glen

Aren't we just gonna just do what we've done previously i.e. vote for your top 3 - 1st 2nd 3rd and the points allocation can get sorted later, all it needs at first is our vote for the best 1st, down to your 3rd favorite?

Mr THX

We haven't previously voted like that have we??

matty

is simple enough, as we discussed before, you vote for your top 3, the points are then allocated accordingly when the votes are in and counted.

Previously you voted for your top 3 and the number of votes was the score, we changed it to make it fairer for those who cant enter every round.

the make sense?

That makes sense, yes, and that's the way I thought it worked. I was just wondering why we had to specify which was our first fave, whichw as our second, and which was our third.
I didn't mean to start a big debate, I just don't understand how it has any bearing on the scoring.

Yes, good luck everyone!

I'm quite excited about this. It's my first time entering from the start, so I'd be really chuffed to get a couple of early points!

Some excellent shots too, this month's theme really seems to have sparked a lot of thought.

:)

This was a nice topic as we could put all sorts of types of photos in....landscapes, still life, portraits even.

With the new theme of still life..........although different subjects they are all gonna be the same almost!

Have to think of something clever! ;)

You shouldn't have any problems. Open Office can cope with pretty much anything you throw at it. And also, because it's free, they don't keep pestering you for updates like Microsoft do! It's a win/win situation.

Janice

12-02-2007, 15:50
yep - its a necessary evil putting office on - Pc's run so nicely when you first put Xp or Vista on - then you load some software and :P thats the end of that :) - have fun - at least with CD you don't have to feed it 26 floppy disks (those were the days)
