View Full Version : A macro lens and a 1.4TC

I am on a quest now to find something else that I can add to the macro lens to get me closer and better.

I have extension tubes and a Raynox already. When I was out last weekend there was a guy I was talking to with a Nikon who swore by the Kenko 1.4 TC he'd added to his lens. Not 100% sure if he had a macro lens or not to be honest.

So to all you out there - What would a 1.4TC do on the end of a 100mm macro?

Common sense tells me it would make my lens a 140mm - So would that decrease the min focussing distance? Make the bugs bigger on the sensor? Or would it do nothing?

Thanks for your help

Iirc it will mate your lens 14omm plus increase the magnification to 1.4, adumong that your macro lens is 1:1 to start with. I can not remember what it will do to your min focusing distance.

Not do a whole lot of good for the image quality.
If you want to get in closer why not get more extn tubes or a bellows. These don't degrade optical quality.

That's just the point - I don't really want to have to get in closer than I am already doing!! My other option is my 100-400 which is working well and I add 36mm of extension tubes onto it to lower the min focusing distance from 1.8m.

I guess that I am trying to achieve something in between the 2 - Scrambling in the undergrowth with the 100mm macro or standing about 5 ft away with the 100-400!! They both thave their advantages of course.

The 1.4x will increase your magnification by 1.4 but the minimum focus distance will remain the same...that's a function of the lens alone.

The Kenko should work fine - I shoot Nikon, so I can't help with Canon specifics, but my Kenko 1.4x TC works on all my lens.

Your mimimum working distance will stay the same, but you'll get a 140% increase in size.

As you'll be stopping down for more Depth of Field, you won't see any noticable optical problems with the combo.

Any serious isues with IQ degradation?

I could be wrong, but I think that is directed at me and some totally stupid post I made yesterday. After what I said, Bob is expecting me to have trouble 'stopping down'

Something to do with Saras` aperture adjustment whilst in shutter priority mode Andy.

I am guessing that on a scale from -1 to -10 you're not feeling particulary chivalrous today?:D
