Im going to treat myself to one of these to replace my Canon stuff that i had to sell to start my new business venture.
Do you reckon that they will come down a fair bit when the D300s arrives or shall i just buy it now!?

Hard to say. But if I were Mr Nikon I wouldn't. I mean why should he? The D300s is a gimmicky piece of gimmicky gimmick and the D300 will continue to sell until such time as Nikon bring out the D400. At least, that's what I'd be thinking if I were Mr Nikon.

There's been a few D300 vs. 300s threads of late... Might be worth a quick flick through this section's pages? Below's a linky to one that got quite a few responses:

I'm glad to say that I don't think the D300s will effect the resale value of the D300 much at all.

The price of the old D300 has to drop once the initial "rush" to buy the 300s subsides (about 12 minutes after they hit the shelves, by my reckoning ) and the price of the new model comes down...

hyakuhei

I doubt it will move significantly; the price drops when more D300's enter the second hand market but by most accounts, few people will be selling their D300's to "upgrade" to the D300s and thus (hopefully) the supply of second hand D300's will continue to satisfy the demand for them at the current price.

That said, bring on the price drop - I'll buy a couple!

Just buy the D300 now. :)

I did on Monday for £1069, which is £230 of the rrp I believe. The 300s is available for £1269, so £230 of that RRP so in all honesty I cant see it coming down much more. If a D400 is launched at a similar price to the D300 then I think thats when prices will drop.

I got mine from DigitalDepot.

I agree, i don't think the D300s is a significant upgrade to the D300, i just can't see people who already have a D300 rushing out to buy a D300s, and selling there D300 on, seems pointless to me, unless of course you have money to throw at the hobby :)

I have a D60 at the mo and want to get either a D300 or D300s. Should I get a 2nd hand D300 for £800 or a new D300s for £1300

If you want to get the silly video "feature" yes.

If you want to use it like a normal camera and take... photographs!! - save the £500.

Only you can really answer that as only you know your budget, if it was me i would just go for the D300, or possibly wait for a D400 if you can :)

Depends what lenses you have really. You could always put the difference in money towards quality lenses.

at the moment I shoot mainly wildlife and have the Nigma and Tamron 90mm MACRO lens. When do you think a D400 would be released? Would it be on the same two-year cycle? If so, I couldn't wait that long!

IMHO the D300s is what could easily have been called a D400.

It was very clear back in February a D300 replacement was coming, but everyone in the know expected it to be a D400.

So the D300s is probably the D400 that never was really.

What is now going to be the D400 (this time next year at a guess) will be quite different to this. So.. can you wait a year?

Nikon have given me a D300s to play around with out here in Berlin for the World Athletics.

Photographically, same as the D300. It has D700 controls and the dual SD/CF which are nice additions.

Video wise, the AF is good but the video is still just for fun. You won't use it for much less.

It's an upgrade, but not a signifcant one. You wouldn't move from a D300 to a D300s but possibly consider a D300s as a first purchase. However, and if finances allow, spend the extra and get the D700.

I bought my D300 a month or so ago, and love it. I have no need to use the video functionality, I will happily buy a camcorder for that. If the D300's drop in price, I will glady buy a second one as a backup.

I've had my D300 3 weeks, buy one it will last years and just because the model is a couple of years old, it isn't old hat compared to what's coming out new now.
The technology is today's.

I'm gutted - I was expecting the D300 replacement to be a clear improvement camera wise. Instead virtually everyone's saying they won't upgrade meaning the second hand prices of the D300 won't be driven down... :'(

If only I'd have bought a D300 towards the end of last year when 2nd hand prices were decent!

Good call i would definitely agree with this, i also think the D300 is probably the best cropped sensor DSLR around at the moment, however IMHO the D700 is on another level :)

The D300 is £940.05 at www.onestop-digital.com - anyone made such large purchases from them?

I expect prices of D300 to drop about 10% in a month or two.

Made a large investment around a year ago - Jessops, 1500 ish for D300 and 18-200 vr lens, flash gun (jessops brand).

I know I prolly spent too much but there is the added interest free for 12 months (as long as you pay it off) which means I got to play with it a lot and pay it off near the end :)

I am loving the d300, and now have the tokina 11-16, and a 105 AF D (nikon) as the two main lenses.

Still looking for other lenses, but the 105 is great for macro shots.

the tokina has some quirks with exposures but has produced some really nice shots.

:)

if you want to play now - go get that d300 :)

There is lots of information on OneStop, predominantly in the Suppliers section. Here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=157716) is a very recent thread.

Indeed - sending £1k cameras as "Gifts" or "repaired" with a very low valuation is very very dodgy.

Not only that, there will be no warranty anywhere unless its sent back to Nikon HK.

Btw, Pixmania also have the D300 at a competitive price http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/624818/art/nikon/d300.html?srcid=867

£1059 inc VAT
£15 off purchases over £15 (expires end today) Summer0955
3% Quidco (ex VAT) £26.88 http://www.quidco.com/pixmania/

making a grand total of roughly £1017. Perhaps the best UK price..?

I wouldn't touch pixmania, i've read to many bad reviews about them, you may even be lucky if you get an English manual with a D300 from them, among other things.

Well, i couldnt wait any longer.
Stuart at Digital Depot done me a D300s and 16-85mm VR for not much more than some places are selling D300 with a 16-85mm. What with the lens money off vouchers, ill save enough money to have made the "s" cheaper than a 300 by the time ive bought a couple more.(if that makes sense!?)

Would any of you say that it is worth £300 more for the video feature, CF/SD card slot, virtual horizon and the other changes made for the D300s?

Bearing in mind that buyers of the D300s may receive lens vouchers twice of a discount, than the D300?

Thanks!

I was looking at getting the D300 until I heard the D300s is out.

I know it costs more and according to some, the video is 'just a gimmick' but I will use it, even if its just for recording friends and family messing around. I just gives us an extra medium to record things in :)

I was umming and arring when they were at £1600 but now they've hit £1300ish I will be getting one.

Only you can decide if the extras are worth it tbh.
