Was out walking and this tree caught my eye.

The image does not do it justice, as im still learning.

I liked the contrast between the dead tree and the living tree. Thought it worked.

I can see what you were thinking with this but the first image is too dark, although the sky is ok and the second is the opposite. With shots like this I find a neutral density graduated filter will help to expose the subject correctly and still keep some detail in the sky. I prefer the 2nd shot as your composition is much better and we can see both trees, maybe a shot from lower down and nearer the dead tree with the living tree behind? Not sure if that would work but its worth exploring all the different options as sometimes one leaps out as an idea that works.

Cheers

Not too bad.
Problem with shooting trees like that is they really need to be on their own with nothing in the background and a nice sky.
If you fancy going out one day round and about just give me a bell im only up the road from you in Shotts.

They dont really do anthing for me, a difficult subject to make interesting. Difficult because of the lighting conditions and also the viewpoint, it looks as though theres quite a bit of knarled texture to the tree, so maybe getting upclose to it may help. I agree the contrast between alive and dead is fine, but its just not interesting enough. Also, and I dont know if this is deliberate, theres a green tinge to the second shot.
