View Full Version : HMS Ark Royal
Me and my brother went off this evening to take some pics of the sunset on the coast and came across Ark Royal anchored in the Sound :)

They've suffered at the hands of jpeg compression but still :)
I know it's big but the idea of landing an aircraft on there....

Good job they only land Harriers and Helis on it! A Hornet would be interesting to say the least......
Good captures...

I saw the Ark Royal 2 or 3 years ago moored up at Greenwich near the Cutty Sark. It's small in comparison to it's predesessor.
its thoughtful of them to put a bmx ramp on the deck so the sailors have something to do on those long boring days
A Hornet would be interesting to say the least....They could land a F/A-18 Hornet on there easily. They have cables stretched across the deck and an arrester hook on the back of the aircraft which catches the cables on landing and stops it in a very short distance. Wouldn't even need half of the runway.
The new future carriers should be mighty impressive :) they will be 3x the displacement of the current Invincible class carriers
Any money spent on the armed forces is money well spent in my eyes especially if it's big and scary :D We have arguably the best trained armed forces in the world but the government doesn't want to spend money on them and equipment contracts are too often given to the lowest bidder :shake:

Very nice pics, first images I've seen of her with the newly fitted radar.
I watched this ship being built as a kid and can even remember her leaving the Tyne after completion - didnt realize how long ago that was
For the record I totally agree with Col M - any one whos willing to risk there life for this country deserves the best thats available to do that task, too many cut backs and its gone over the line in so many sectors already.
Hope you don't mind me joining in with this thread, I wanted to for a number of reasons.
Firstly my son is on the HMS Chatham and we went to see him dock in Devonport after his first stint at sea.
Secondly it's because it was this day that finally got me to wise up and buy a DSLR. I had been toying with the idea for ages and on this particular day I took my Minolta Dimage S304 with me. Lovely little camera and it has served me well, but in front of me, in atrocious weather may I add was a fella with a Canon 1Ds Mark II and I went green :)
So heres the shots of the Chatham that came out the best.

Sounds like the entire armed forces.
:) I used to live on a lighthouse in Stranrar, Corsewall point was its name, and I used to watch the Ark Royal pass by quite often. It really was quite something to see, it was huge. I remember being very impressed by it as a 3 year old.
Great shots.. You got very lucky!
Two Canoes and a Coracle do not make it The Senior Service (which was a brand of fags as I recall).
If they were any good, they wouldn't be cutting them by up to 50% whilst increasing Army manpower (having said that we do seem to be losing a few these days thanks to Tony BLiar's job creation schemes...)
(which was a brand of fags as I recall).
FNAR FNAR. Sorry, couldn't resist a dig at the senior service.
Happens every day here at sunny DMOC - what with an LA(Phot) (a Leading-Rate, known as a 'Killick' due to the small anchor emblem that is their rank badge, in case any of you wondered why the grumpy chef in 'Master and Commander' was so called...) as my video oppo and a naval Captain as Director.
Rust-picking squids the lot of 'em...
Just refresh our memory as to your views on the air force as well Rob, if you would?! ;)
