View Full Version : Just a thought!
He there, I have only been on this site for a few daysnow. I did notice something though as I was looking around at galleries, and different posts. Alot of great talent here I should say. As a total newbie just entering the world of photography. I would like to know the "specs' on a picture when I see it. I would like to see beside every picture what kind of camera it was, what lense, F-stop and so on. I just feel it would help out alot more for those who are beginners. In photography though there is always room to grow for anyone. I see some beautiful pictures here and wonder to myself, how did they do that? If the specs are being posted and I am just not seeing them forgive me,lol. Thank you, Jewel.

Maybe a member profile for each gallery owner would be a better idea?
Putting it in for every shot would get tiresome :)
Shutter speed and aperture are helpful, but most of us tend to do what the camera tells us to unless we're trying to acheive unusual.
You can generally guess at aperture by looking at the depth of field.
None of us have a magic wand, some of us would like one :)
I suppose as members we could fill in out profiles, im trying to find a way to get a link to our galleries under our username on the forums, a basic user profile is already available by clicking the users name...
EXIF data is the information that you refer to, all digital cameras record information when the image is taken such as aperture and shutter speed, if those of us that have exif data reading tools could post some basic data, or if you want specific information you could pm the poster or post and ask?
You could always add a link into the signature.
Part of the problem is the time it would take to supply all the information and settings for each picture and part is that to much is read into what equipment is being used and people assume that buying the same equipment will return the same results, this simply is not the case.
Your point is valid though as a basic overview off how a picture was captured will help the less experienced to learn. The members gallery is for this as is the free competition that we are currently running. After the competition has closed and the results are in everyone will be able to explain how they captured the shots, what equipment and technique was used as well as giving and recieving criyique and comments on all the other entries. Hopefully if we get a good response it will develop into a great competition and learning tool whist being useful and fun at the same time.
Jewel, if you use PS (Photoshop) and you download a picture, you can go to FILE, then FILE INFO, and theres a tab that sais, CAMERA INFO 1, and CAMERA INFO 2, there is the EXIF data of that picture, sometimes the pictures will have it and sometimes not, depending of the software you use to save it for web use. But, well, thats a begining.
And as well, when someone post a picture, this user can write the essential part of EXIF or just copy paste it here.
This info you can see it as well, on some of the member pages. Take a look at mine (http://ppuga.smugmug.com).
Cheers.
