View Full Version : A Liverpool Meet
Ok we're having a meet on either Saturday 16th or Sunday 17th of June. Whichever gets more votes. We're meeting at 10am at the Albert Docks, by the Granada Television building. You won't miss it.
We're meeting here at 10am. (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=salthouse+quay,+liverpool&sll=53.400816,-2.990006&sspn=0.007331,0.023518&ie=UTF8&ll=53.401435,-2.986865&spn=0.00733,0.023518&z=16&om=1) You'll see the Granada building.

Car park locations. You should easily get a space there. If you're taking the train to Lime Street, you'll be quite close to Queens Square bus station. You need to get the bus to either Albert Dock or Paradise Street Station. Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction so everyone will know it and it'll be sign posted.
So far...
9 for Sat ( redhed17, Grant, petemc, chenko, -Paul-, tomh, zeroeseight, moomike, whiteflyer )
7 for Sun ( Grant, petemc, chenko, -Paul-, tomh, zeroeseight, moomike )
Any more takers?

Yeah sounds good to me, if the date is sorted soonish then I should be able to make whenever. The only possible date I cant make is the 21st Feb as it is my sisters birthday. But I am up for anything :) You gonna be our tour guide Pete?

Maybe we could decide on a day, Saturday will be full of people and sunday a bit quieter. Suppose it depends what everyone wants to get out of the day???
So maybe the last what ever day in feb or the first whatever day in march??
Would be ace, if you don't mind a 16-year old coming along?

Might be up for this, possibly, depends on sue's shifts and what not too.

and Liverpool sounds good :)
Sunday maybe a better day. Town won't be as busy. Shall we set a provisional date of Sunday 25th Feb? York is busier than Liverpool is but I think thats because the streets are narrower. It'll only be busy in the city centre around Lord and Bold street. Everywhere else will be fine.

I think it might have to be mini double choc muffins for a change!
Is there a Lime Street Station in Liverpool? ... I remember reading about it as a meeting place in a romantic novel I read years ago...
If I am free on the date that suits the majority, then I would like to join you - especially now another lady has responded. Wouldn't like to cramp your style, Boys.

Are Saturdays really hectic Pete? I didnt find York too busy to be honest - you think we are talking that kind of busy?
Nah they're not that bad. York is worse because the streets are narrower. In Liverpool its only like one long road with all the shops on that's busy. We can easily walk around it if need be.

You could always go for a trip on the ferry across the Mersey and take in Hamilton Square; some very nice architecture around there.
Yeah and you get the skyline shot too.

It could be like the whacky racers for anyone driving to the meet, espescially if Liverpool or Everton are playing at home.
Surely they'd be arriving before the fans? Meets usually start at 10am.

Would love to come as it's years since I've been to Liverpool. Only problem is that I'm driving up to Yorkshire for a few days on the 25th Feb, and Liverpool is gonna be too far away :(
Edit: Just checked train times and it would still take me at least 3.5 hours on the train from Doncaster.

Put me in for a tentative yes. I'm still trying to convince hubby that we can do it on the cheap. I think weather will probably play a big part too as it is a good 2 hour drive IF I don't get lost.
Really does depends on when we are going as I would like to come on this.
i will make this a sticky for you!
Cheers :) I've set the provisional date to the weekend of either 24/25th Feb, or 3rd/4th March just to see how many we can get for each, then go with which ever is more popular.

Any of them dates sound good to me, i'll go with the majority on this one seen as i live in the city centre anyway.
I should be up for this Pete, no commitments on either weekend that I can think of (the only real problem i can foresee is some kind of uni deadline, but I'll try and get the work done before hand if necessary :P).
Sounds like fun :).
Would go watch the football that would be fine by me :)

Its looking like the 3rd/4th March is the better weekend.
I'm quite new to these forums but would like to tag along to this
Being from Liverpool, I like to get out into the city taking shots, but to get the perspective and advice from more experience photographers sounds interesting and a bit of fun.
Best days for me would be any of those sugegsted apart from the 3rd March. As much as i like photography, I don't want to miss Liverpool destroying manyoo. You'll proberly find town will get quite busy matchday as well, as people come in to watch the game.

Just re-read the whole thread and the only people (who have posted) who might have problems with the 4th are Warspite (public transport on a Sunday) and Darksaber and Sue (birthday). I think we could get the birthday boy to come along with promises of Ice Cream Factories though! :p - anyway seriously.....Public transport could be a bugger, I am probably going to get a train over there too, so maybe this would have to have a later start date, or maybe two times for meeting up? and early and latecommers time at set places or something (just ideas)
Yeah could have that if need be.
I cant do any saturdays but sundays are cool, so count me in if its a sunday. BTW, that thing about the newbie carrying everyones gear was a joke right?...lol:whistling: Tomh :whistling:
I would like to come but depend on matt and his parents, it is his birthday and hos mums so dont know what they are wanting to do, if we can make it I am sure we would.
Not heard anything here from Barry and Marianne either when we talked about it in york think they were interested?? Maybe I mis-heard.

It all depends on the date (and money) as we may have to stay somewhere for the night.... Liverpool's the other side of the world from us! :(

I haven't really got any plans for my Birthday - we're going to Amsterdam Thursday night but back Saturday morning and I don't know if my mum is going away for the weekend or not with her birthday being the 3rd.
I guess we could do Liverpool.
Last time I was there I found a joke shop and found a perm wig and a fake moustache and spent the day walking around in it saying "eh eh calm down". I'm suprised I didn't get decked.

Best thing about the York trip was Marianne's cookies, followed by that ice cream factory thing that me and Barry liked :D
I am so jealous that I missed that one, especially now that I know there was cookies & ice cream! :'(
Matt Charlton

Hmmmm are we any closer to picking a date yet, as I need to arrange things like shifts and days off, so the more notice I can get the better it is.
The 3rd/4th of March is the better weekend. I think the sunday will allow for more people if travel is ok with everyone? I think the day would probably start at 10am and finish about 6ish like York. The transport system won't stop at 4pm will it?
Thesunday would be better for us, means I would get chance to do some washing and stuff on the saturday. 10am would be a good time, gives people plenty of time to get there and for those not travling too long means they get a lay in for a bit. As for fininshing time, I guess people can drift off when they are ready/need to.
Fine with me. Have you got a pub and/or restaurant in mind for those who don't have long journeys home?
Warspite

Hadn't really thought about it. Could be good. If we go with the sunday, what would be open in town? I'm guessing starbucks would close at 4pm. Nero might still be open maybe. Albert Docks would probably be closed too.
Scrub starbucks, meh, find a proper place :p
4th of March is fine by me. Have you thought of a meeting place for 10am? If there are any late arrivals due to delays with transport etc, would you consider giving out a mobile number for us to contact someone to be able to then catch up with the group. Just a thought.

Yeah once the date has been finalised and I have a list of who's coming I'll PM my number. I'm thinking Lime Street station will be a good meeting place. There's a car park behind it thats £3.50 for the whole day and some might be arriving by train.
I just need confirmation that transport won't be an issue on the Sunday. If not we'll go ahead with that date.

Looks like we might be coming, I will be driving as well so is the station easy to find, and I dont mind paying 3.50 for parking for the day.
Lime Street Station (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=lime+street+station,+liverpool&sll=53.098145,-2.443696&sspn=8.952939,20.566406&ie=UTF8&z=17&ll=53.407684,-2.979891&spn=0.004336,0.013561&t=h&om=1). The car park is on Lord Nelson Street. There's another just down the road on Whitechapel too, but they charge by the hour as its right in town.
Thanks for that will the car park get busy or are there plenty of parking spaces?
Thats where I park for the day when I travel but I get there at about 7am. It can get busy.
Ok thanks might look at maybe getting there a bit earlier, but then its sunday so might not be too busy.

Upmarket breakfasts in Liverpool.
http://www.sugarvine.com/liverpool/feature_stories/feature_stories.asp?story=378
Hmmmm breakfast, might be an idea now.
As for parking can't complain at £2.50 for the day, worth getting there a bit earlier, sure we can manage to find something to do. Maybe even a slightly earlier meeting time depending on how many of us plan on getting there early. Either that or a nap in the car once parked.
Sounds good, there are loads of places that would be good for breakfast & the L1 is awesome for sunday lunch, I think its 2 for 1 but will check in case anyones interested (& they have the most comfy couches!) :D
Hmmmm 2 for 1 is good and comfy couches are ok, but someone maybe need to keep me awake after such a busy weekend.

The previous 2 Saturdays are fully booked with the scouse reds against Sheff Utd and a bunch of hoolies from Trafford Park :cuckoo: .
Will probably get the train from Stockport direct to Limey. Will be nice to see some people from the forum as I have been lurking a lot but not posting.

One glitch has appeared. They're building a canal at the Pier Head which means for the next year you can't get any decent photos there! Albert Docks is still fine, but its a bit annoying. Well, I suppose we can work around it but for people like me who love wide angle shots its annoying :)

Is it worth lugging a tripod around Liverpool or will we get away with all handheld stuff?
I'd imagine that depends on how lousy the weather is. I'm going to decide on the day.

Ok well basically they're at exact opposite ends of town :D As we're starting at Lime Street I'd say we wonder up to the cathedrals, then wander into town (via China Town / Duke street) for lunch, then down to the docks area after lunch and back to Lime Street via the library and St Georges hall area.
I *think* there's a Pizza hut place next to McDonalds, which is just across from Burger King if need be.

Easily solved Matt, get Sue to pay
sorry Sue :coat:

aw thats a shame Gilly :( hope work isnt too dull!
We can always do it another day too, or post-pone this one if need be. I guess if the weather is bad and if its only me and 1 other maybe that might be better. If there is a larger number planning on coming I was thinking of starting at Lime Street station at 10am.

sorry Pete - I'm gonna have to drop out - I was really hoping to get to Liverpool as last time I was there was in the 80's and I was working with Fish (one time lead singer of Marillion). - so got the feeling things would have changed.
Have fun guys. - I will however (hopefully) be at Chester so might meet some of you then.
Anyone else still planning on coming? I've only got 1 pm so far.

Still hoping to get to this meet.
I am currently due back at work on Monday, but one of our guys is on the sick and if he's not back by Saturday, I will have to go in on Sunday to cover.
I will know for sure by Friday lunchtime.
Thats 1, maybe 2 or 3.... Its the biggest construction site in Europe! Come and see it ;)

No mate thats Bradford, they knocked the City Centre down and decided that they didn't have planning permission to do something or other and no shops have signed up to the new shopping centre so its going to stay as a huge crater for a few years ;)
Anyone else still planning on coming? I've only got 1 pm so far.
I'm intending to come along.

Forecast is definitely looking iffy at the moment, but it's been changing fast the last few weeks, so I wouldn't despair unless it's still looking bad by Sat.
I'm open to putting it off a couple of weeks though. 'Rain and strong winds' doesn't sound terribly promising for photography around central Liverpool.
I would love to come along but I have been roped into carpeting the roof of my father in laws canal boat..dont ask, but its an astro turf or something like that.
That is a real shame as I was looking forward to meeting some of you guys.

Yeah cold, wind, rain isn't exactly inviting. Have to wait till tomorrow or Sat to see whats what. I think there might be enough people for a small meet now, 4 or so I think.

BBC weather still seems to be sticking to heavy rain all day :( Today and Saturday kept changing a bit, but Sunday seems a deffinate downpoor! :( If it doesnt change by tonight then I think I am going to have to pull out. Got a cold and walking around in the rain really isnt going to do my any good I dont think :( was really looking forward to this too! bugger *crosses fingers for weather change*
Plus our cameras aren't exactly water sealed. Sure I don't mind a bit of rain but a day of rain, walking around soaked... nah :)
Ok due to the rain forecast tomorrow I think its best we post-pone and try again maybe next month.
Makes sense to me. Just checked the Met Office and it's quite emphatic about the probability of heavy rain and gale force winds during the daylight hours.

Anybody want to suggest a revised date for this?
Anybody want to suggest a revised date for this?
a sunday would be good for me..even this sunday 25th, after that, My sundays are clogged up between gymnastics stuff and orchestra stuff ( my girls hobbies) until May 6th and I canny do Saturdays either.
any ideas, the nights are getting lighter too.
Since it looks like no one can make this, I have now made arrangements to go to Anglesey on sunday..so expect some Anglesey pics next week.
I'm still up for a meet and given a bit of notice can do most weekends.
Would like to make this one too time/dates permitting.....
I still plan on setting a date, I'm just a bit snowed under at the moment.

Might be interested in traveling down, a fellow photographer has family that lives in Liverpool so it could work in well :)
for any merseysiders...dont forget the Egg run on sunday, its going to be the biggest yet apparently and no doubt a decent photo opp.
Ok lets get back on track. Who's up for either Saturday 19th May or Saturday June 2nd?
redhed17
08-05-2007, 17:05
I could do 2nd June.
Can't do the 19th, as I'm off to Lithuania on the 17th for my birthday. :D
can do the 19th may but not 2nd of June...My wedding anniversary.

Could do either but would prefer 2nd June
Seems like the 2nd of June is the current fave. There's so much to see so I reckon we just meet at Lime Street and wander.
MOT is due the day before, but going to put it through sooner. So should be ok.
Can you do me a favour Pete and sms when the date is confirmed? I will let you know when I can. What time would it be? ta muchy
Think the Lord Mayor's parade also on the 2nd June, so extra photo oportunity.

It is. Sorry I haven't devoted enough attention to this thread and maybe it would be better to shift it to the weekend of the 16th because the Mersey River Festival will be on and that'll have a huge number of things to photograph. Generally boats, maybe planes, people, all sorts. A great weekend.
Sshish..hope it just tests m8..dont like hozzies or tests.
Hope the tests are ok whiteflyer. The River festival is a full 3 day host of events. They didn't have it in 2006 but I'm hoping this year, 800th birthday of Liverpool, is a winner. Day 1 (http://www.vanilladays.com/gallery/2005/06/the-mersey-river-festival-friday-10th-june-2005/) / Day 2 (http://www.vanilladays.com/gallery/2005/06/the-mersey-river-festival-saturday-11th-june-2005/) / Day 3 (http://www.vanilladays.com/gallery/2005/06/the-mersey-river-festival-sunday-12th-june-2005/) from 2005.

Also that weekend is the Africa Oye festival (apologies if already mentioned further up the thread) http://www.africaoye.com/ in Sefton Park. It's usually a really colourful and well attended event. I'm going to be there on the Sunday, weather permitting.
Ah right. So then a busy weekend even without the meet. I think the 16th is potentially the best day, even though town will be packed. I reckon a casual 10am start. Hows everyone going to be arriving? Car, train?
I'd have loved to have joined you guys on this one but I'm out on a pi55 up on Friday night as I've left my job and then off to the Welsh Mountain Zoo on the Saturday with my kids and probably a stinking hangover! I'll keep an eye for another Liverpool meet though if you'd have me!

Its easy. If you hit the water you've gone too far.

There's one in planning for this Saturday. You're welcome to join us :)
Why oh why did I promise work I'd cover this Saturday..Boo to me.

The Infedial known as myself could do either day.
How long would the meet last till?
They last till about 5/6pm.
I should be able to make it to both days - think I'm heading to the Oye festival on one of the days though is anyone else is planning on going?
I do want to some how document both. In 2005 there was enough going on just at the River Festival. Its the 800th birthday so you'd expect something big. However, given that the council is missing £20m to pay for the CoC year I have a feeling it won't be *that* big. I would like to as I've never been before.

More details about the £2 parking please
Its £3.50 on a saturday and £2.50 on Sunday at the car park on Lord Nelson Street. Its then a 1.5 mile walk or so. Google Maps shows the distance. (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&hl=en&saddr=lord+nelson+street,+liverpool&daddr=salthouse+quay,+liverpool&sll=53.408112,-2.978539&sspn=0.007329,0.020771&ie=UTF8&z=15&om=1)
Or... you could park on the Dock Road by Costco for free and have pretty much the same walk. Not quite as scenic though. Although Stanley Dock is up that way, and good for a few shots. You can walk through the Tobacco Warehouse onto the quayside and get some shots, or sometimes empty bits of the ground floor can be accessed if they leave the shutters up.
But anyway... I might be down at the River Festival for one of the days for a couple of hours, in which case I'll keep an eye out for you guys.

Its by the national express bus station, is a bit of a lengthy walk down to the dock (20mins) but meh £2 better than £4.

Ok it seems the general consensus is that Saturday is the best day. So thats Saturday, 10am at the Granada TV building. You'll see it as soon as you enter Albert Docks. If everyone who's officially coming can check the first post (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=16151) for their name. If I've missed you off please let me know. I'll be PM'ing people my batphone number once everyone's been confirmed. Just incase you get lost :D

Weather update for tomorrow. Rain (http://uk.weather.yahoo.com/UKXX/UKXX1743/index_c.html). Bring a brolly or something :)
Right. Important update. Turns out the boats aren't actually at the Albert Dock. They're 2 miles out of town but a free bus service will take us there and back from Paradise street. Apparently at Albert Dock there will be street entertainers and a gospel choir. So if we wanna see the boats, we'll be getting the free bus ride there and back. Nuts. Stupid organisers.

I'm still up for it, if I can get myself out of bed. ;)
Got the PM Pete, so I'll hopefully track you down.
I think there will be stuff happening at the Albert Dock as well. There were canal boats moored in the dock earlier in the week.
The weather could mess things up though. :( Fingers crossed, the rain passes without falling. ;) :D
According to the BBC woman it might rain in the afternoon. I'll probably be wearing my monkey hat so I should be easy to find. I've only really had 3 replies to my PM's assuming they were sent ok :)
I've only received messages from moomike, redhead and paulc about tomorrow. Anyone else 100% going to turn up? Don't really want to be waiting around for hours not knowing if you're coming or not.
