does any body know what settings my camera should be on to use a remote to fire it? nikon D50. thanks guys.

There should be a shooting mode for the remote. I would expect the modes to be: single shot, multiple shot, self timer, remote etc etc.

if you press the self timer button it cycles - self timer, remote self timer and jsut remote
