Got a shot i really liked , pressed the shutter and the viewfinder dimmed and the display came up " error 99 ". I replaced the battery , turned on and off yet the viewfinder still remained dark and still the error. I tried a close up shot of anything and it worked fine , the instant i zoom right out the viewfinder goes dark and error.

Try cleaning the contacts on the lens and the body. Err99 is the catch-all "I don't know what's wrong but something is" error on canon camera's - usual source is a bad connection between lens and body.

It's the lens , i put the sigma on it zoomed in zoomed out worked perfect. This one as soon as i put the other lens on and zoom right out " Err 99 ". I've cleaned the contacts and it still does it . Also with my ear up against it , it sounds like something is grating as i rotate the lens on zoom out.
Oh well no photography for awhile :(

We used to get this on out D60/10D/20D cameras when using Sigma lenses. We had the lenses re-chipped to work with them but they still never were that reliable. Error 99 was the bane of my life for several months!!

Which lens and which camera?
I believe that the 50d had a firmware which update which gave a few more useful errors.

are the aperture blades stuck stopped down? as that would explain the dark viewfinder. if so set the aperture to the smallest setting (high f number) and press the dof preview button a few times and it should free them

Cool i'll try it now
EDIT : No go and i can certainly see the blades getting stuck , the dof preview button isn't freeing them :(

Sounds like time for a lens upgrade unfortunately
