On my eos 400d in the menu i can change the picture size, ie: S, M and L this will decrease the quality? and allow more shots to be store on the CF card.

But there is also another choice next to the S,M,L, which shows a jagged edge icon, the size doesent change when they are selected.

So two questions...
1. how does the quiliy suffer in S,M,L?
2. What does the jagged edge icon mean?

Hope that makes sense.

thanks.

1 Only image physical pixel dimensions change

2 Compression levels change, quality suffers

The choices are:

S - small - 1936 x 1288
M - Medium - 2816 x 1880
L - Large - 3888 x 2592

The jagged edge option is for standard quality, the smooth one is for fine (best) quality - given how cheap memory is I'd say you should always be shooting L fine if shooting jpgs.

I'd have a think about going to RAW files as well dizz, there's a few advantages such as you can change the white balance after shooting and you can do more in post processing generally. If you're shooting images you want to get the best out of by processing go RAW, if you're shooting snaps and not worried then stick with jpegs.
