My canon 24-70 is off for service and screw fitting but I have a sigma 28-70 f2.8Ex DG (not so good). I believe that DG means that it can be used on a fullframe with smashing the mirror/sensor. Is that correct?

No. DG doesn't mean that. DG is an imaginary magic lens coating that adds 30% to the price ;)

DC is for cropped bodies. So if its not a DC lens it should be fine.

The lens you mention will work fine on a full frame camera.

Out of interest, any reason you don't rate your 28-70?

Some of the reviews seem to point to the sigma 24-70 being the best but hardly anything I've seen mentions the 28-70 as being as good. Although saying that I've had some really good images at wide aperture in high contrast situations on canon 50D, but not used it on 5D yet. The other canon L lens I used (14-70 & 70-200) appear to have much sharper images than some of the other canon ones I use. On the other hand I notice that at the wide angle zoom of the canon 24-70 2.8 there was quite a lot of vigenetting that I didn't expect to be there on an L lens. Maybe its the cheaper MC uv filter I have on it?

sorry, but i think the lens coating thing is wrong.
dc is for crop sensors. dg are suitable for 35mm film, andf full frame digital.

sure i saw the ad in a mag somewhere.

Following on re Canon vigenetting. This is Canon 24-70 2.8 focusing probable due to lost screw from rear of lens. This is an untouched uncropped BW pic from sunday on 5D, F5 1/1600 sec ISO200 focal length 25mm. No pol or ND filter, just uv mc filter from calumet. This is the lens that have sent off for service / repair?
