View Full Version : London Meet?
This has been briefly discussed by a few of us recently, and i know there has been at least one London meet before, so how about another sometime in the near future? Personally i've not really visited in many years and would be very interested in having a wonder around and taking a few snap
Is anyone else up for it? It doesn't have to be that soon, but i'm just raising the topic and putting it up for discussion!
When?
11th March (provisional date)
Where are we meeting?
Undecided - Maybe Waterloo?
Where will be be visiting?
Who is going?
Who 'might' be going?

Would always be up for a London meet :)

I'll be there in March. :D
Subject to dates I'm definately on for this again. Remember if people want to do what we did last time and finish the day with some low-light stuff then it needs to be before the clocks change ideally. :)
Given enough time I might be able to get cheap tickets, though not for the next 2 months at least, I've checked. With the right date I can do London return for £25.

I couldn't do the last for various reasons so would def be up for it:thumbs:

How about between March 13 and March 25? :)
sounding good for me too !
Would like to go, would enjoy this I think. Well I would consider getting the train, or maybe staying overnight somewhere.
Would like to do some evening stuff so before the clocks change I guess would be good, arent sure when that is this year.
I might give this one a go!

I'd probably be up for this if given enough notice on the exact dates!
Anyone any suggestion for dates?

Might be in London for IFE (http://www.ife.co.uk/) on 18th-21st March but most likely just one day :(
I think a Sunday would be best. Clocks go on 25th March.
That leaves us 4th,11th & 18th March.
How do those dates sound?
Jonnyreb
30-01-2007, 09:32
4th and 11th work for me - likely to be celebrating my dads birthday over the weekend of the 18th.......
Beverley and I could make 11th March  I'd really like to stay on to try out some low light stuff too. Fancy teaching me your techniques Witch? :D

4th is no good theres the liverpool meet on.
Well what about the 11th March then. And failing that have the 4th as a backup date. The people nearer Liverpool can go to that..........and us soft suvveners can go to London! :D
Jonnyreb

Sounds like a plan - best start buying some rain gear now :D
Matt Charlton
30-01-2007, 10:31
March is turning into a busy month :o
arent liverpool and london in largely different geographical areas ? so 2 seperate meets ? ;)
11th March now in my diary :D
Exactly! This would be about the only one I could go to...and it seems a shame to tailor it to fit people who can go to the Liverpool one anyway.

Well, I was intending to go to Liverpool until I realised the trains couldn't get me there till lunchtime, so I'm definately hoping to do the London one. Why is cross country rail transport so useless?
Can't make March, no trains available for under £60 :(

I think we'll have to drive down, the trains are looking a little pricey. I want to go and see Avenue Q on Broadway anyway :D
It's often the parking thats the problem isnt it.
All depends where we are going I guess!

I have no idea...........I'm a country girl! :)

Saturday or Sunday is a nightmare - you may be better off driving to Saint Ablans or Watford and getting the train down from there.......
Forbiddenbiker
30-01-2007, 13:14
We need to choose a location as well...ideas anyone??...something you've always wanted to visit..??
The Canary wharf area is probably out as they don't like photographers around there at all, a large flock of us would freak them out ... they'd try there hardest to ruin our day I'm sure.
Somewhere along the Embankment would give us the boats, the London Eye, the bridge, Parliament Square with the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben etc.
Dont know London well, so just an idea. ;)

Will there be any issues taking photos of the Eye on tripods or of the houses of parliment? Didn't think government buildings were allowed.
I think you're right Matt. There was a thread about it a while ago. I seem to remember the general feeling based on peoples experience was that they're not too bothered once the evening comes and the big crowds have disappeared
They don't like tripods at the London eye, and i'm sure they'd have a great time if there were about 10 of us setting up there :p
Anyway, after starting this thread, i haven't actually checked how much trains are to London
Matt Charlton
30-01-2007, 13:35
Cheaper for you from down there than they are from Bradford ;)
To photograph the Eye its better at dusk anyhow, good place to end the day maybe? There are always places you can sneak a shot of the eye with a pod. Greenwich is spot on, Naval Museum and good shots over to canary wharf.
You have so much to choose, Camden Market is nuts for somethign completely different, you are sure to get some very odd portrait shots there ...

The Eye 'officially' require 'togs, especially the 'professional' types with tripods, to book their visit so it doesn't interfere with their peak times ...
Amateur Photography Article (http://www.amateurphotographer.com/news/top_tourist_magnet_spells_out_photography_rules_ne ws_102561.html) on the subject ... :suspect:
And this is Ven's Thread (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=14473&highlight=London+Eye) on the subject ... HTH ...
Howsabout contacting them and booking as an amateur club visiting London and wanting to get decent pics of the landmarks ... just a thought ... :D
Not tried this but it might be worth a shot to get them on-side and have a chance of some decent, hassle free pics ...
Food for thought anyway ... :p
I'd personally rather we didnt do anything quite so organised.
Be nicer to just tootle around and take pics of anything and everything.
Or is it just me thats so disorganised? :D
I think Ven has a good point, based on my experience of getting chucked out of the Oracle shopping centre 'cause they took offence to me using a "professional" camera on their premesis without their permission. It doesn't mean we have to be particularly organised, just that we'll have their OK to be there, tripods 'n' all. IMHO anyway
to be honest when I went there a few months ago,. just before Christmas I shot different angles using a pod for nearly an hour and it was only when I took shot of county hall and the eye with the tripod did anyone even utter a word. I could of just been very lucky. I was even pointed to an area on the grass in which I could use the pod.

I think anywhere along the embankment between HoP and Tower bridge would give good photo oportunities. Is it possible to actually walk this far along the embankment? (I mean is there access, not is it too far).;)

You can indeed walk all the way down :) I'm liking Vens boat idea down to Greenwich though - there's also the tiny tunnel under the Thames down there :)

Damn sounds fun, dont think I would be able to make it though. Train is just stupid prices and takes 3 and half hours :( Might consider driving down if I find some cheapish solution.
Did a few shots around London years ago when they were building the dome...and went to the Thames Barrier then, it has like a visitors centre next to it, can stand right on the bank and look at it, not really that photogenic though! unless you had some kind of sunset or something bouncing off it.
And I saw that shot on your newfangled-interweb-thing and thought 'I recognise that position' :D

Probabaly a bit far down if you want to get back to the eye and HoP later.
You can walk from Tower Bridge to HOP if you wanted to. Taking in HMS Belfast, soem rather well known art galleries, wobbly bridge, st pauls, etc etc
Sounds like this could turn into a good day out, looking forward to it, if it is on the 11th.
Might see about driving down on the 10th depends on what is happening. And how much things cost.

I know that stretch as I worked at Cannon St for a while: Tower Bridge, the Globe, The Golden Hinde, Ken's Offices, Millennium Bridge, Tate Modern, plenty of old and new architecture and bucket loads of tourists for candids!!!
Lots of material :D
Just curious, is there anyone interested in NOT photographing landmarks and tourist attractions? I would join up for some street shooting.

my guess would be a hotel....fair few of them in London :p
If going for a few nights I would try and get somewhere centralish so you dont have to spend ages getting into London to do whatever.

Depends on whether you're driving or training Sue - any hotel that is fairly central will do you proud :) If driving, you may want somewhere to the north and slightly out of town a little way

There is a Travel Lodge (?) type thingy right behind the old County Hall (adjacent the Eye) ... nice and central and reasonably priced (for London) ... but it does get busy so booking def essential Sue ... :D
:p
Went to uni near london, so would consider staying somewhere near there and getting the tube in, as I know the way there. Was wondering if anyone had stayed in a hotel that was nice, cheapish and central, but easy to get to?

Theres a video of a Thames boat trip on the bbc page behind this link (http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/content/articles/2005/10/06/london_videos_feature.shtml)- I think it covers the stretch between Tower Bridge and beyond - might be of interest regarding whats on the embankment:

I think the best thing if there are loads of us, will be to go off in little groups, rather than have about 50 of us all posting 50 shots of the same thing when we get back. That way, people can shoot what appeals to them the most.
For those wanting to do people stuff, I highly recommend Camden. I love the place, it's very diverse with some weird and wonderful characters.
Will decide nearer the time whether i am able to make it or not as I don't have my work rota for March yet.

I've never done "people" stuff. I'd love to try it...if I have the confidence!

I wasn't suggesting going on the boat!:D
I just thought the video would give an idea of whats on the land along the embankment.
Personally a wander round the back streets and off the beaten track appeals to me - in and around the Cannon St area there is a fantastic mix of architecture from the 1600s through to 2000s.
The wheel and the bridge have been done!!!
Its the quirky bits of London that I like best!
oooh, I DO love shooting at Camden...

Camden is great for street stuff, big market and some canals as well...but is it going to be enough for all of us, all day? .... Theirs not that much else of interest...well not on a huge scale anyway...I used to live that way but I can't think of much. ...Primrose hill has got a good view... I agree with the "not the wheel again" idea (even though it is fab and I love everyone's images) ;) . There is a famous London street that has a flower market on a Sunday, I think. Anyone any idea where it is?
Buildings such as the Lloyds building and the Gerkin (Re Insurance) would also be good, as would some of the old places around the City, though no idea if these are practical/legal possibilities. Are there still old warehouses etc, or have these all gone now?
If we all split up, bear in mind a couple of security issues.....good to have at least 4 in a group for safety.

No idea on the flowers.
There aren't going to be many old warehouses around central London, and a lot of the ones around the outskirts have been demolished and replaced by large sheds, or new build flats unfortunately.... you may have some luck in east London, but I don't know of anywhere
Depending on the weather, the parks may be a good place to go for "people shots".
If you want to take shots in the city I would have thought it should be fairly empty on a Sunday (due to the lack of shops :p)
Hmmmm sorry but would like to see the wheel as I havent seen it, not having been to london for years then sorry would like to do some of the touristy things as well as something different if possible, would like some street shots as well.

I'm interested in this. I'm a bit confused though, has a where and when been decided?
I think as London is so huge, we may have to have a few meets.
Its a case of deciding on a first one really, knowing that we can cover other parts on future dates.
I think a Sunday more than a Saturday. We went along the embankment and through Parliament Square last Sunday and it was quite nice...not too crowded at 10:00am.
Its the parking that worries me. There is parking along the embankment itself but if there are no spaces I wouldnt have a clue.

Shame I won't be about to join you all in the smoke, but got a parking suggestion. I usually park at Newbury Park (on A12 to north east) and tube it from there. Saves a few quid, and is on the central line. Parking is usually no trouble there on a weekend. hth

Right people.....
I assume we're meeting on the 11th (next Sunday) and will put an event in the diary on the site.
But, where are we going to meet and at what time. There's dozens of us meeting up so would it be sensible to meet up halfway between the London Eye and Waterloo station in the little park area? Or have different meeting points depending on what we want to see and where we want to go?
Suggestions so far have been; flower markets / warehouses / London Eye / Greenwich / embankment / Houses of Parliament / underground and overground rail..... and probably more i've forgotten about.
So come on - organising time :)
Oh - weather forecasting up to Saturday looks tolerable - fingers crossed Sunday will be too.

Parking further out and getting the tube in is probably the best idea. I know around my place in Hammersmith there is 8 hour parking and there are always free spaces.

My thoughts are that Jon's suggestion is a good place to meet, or even at the eye itself - easy to find and right by Waterloo station  It would be good to all meet in the same place so we at least get a chance to say Hi, then if we decide to go off on different routes we can organise it from there

I have the shoulders and hips of an arthritic octogenarian, the feet of a 17 year old conscript forced to run cross country in a pair of ill-fitting wellies and general lack of energy today.
But - a great day in the smoke yesterday and at some point over the next few days i'll get the pics downloaded from my cards to see if there is anything worth posting that didn't involve bikes, boards or forum members :)
