Why do we have to log on to read certain pages?

Like reviews, out of focus ect - dont always want to log on if quickly browsing.

Thanks.

I think its a way of getting more people signed up and hopefully getting them to return :) I would do the same to be honest. Do you not just want to click the "remember me" box and let the cookie be saved on your pc and save you having to login Deigo?

Yeah but that looks like you are here 24/7. Cant see the point really. Vary rarely contribute to the out of focus stuff but like to read it most days - if that makes sense.?

I think my last post there was 'the beard has gone!'

Id you stay logged on for over half an hour it makes you look like you arent logged on.

i cant see a problem.... you open the site and it auto logs you on.... when youve looked around the shut the page and you are no longer logged on.

It only shows you as here if you have the browser open pete. your name will show up in the list of people who have visited the site today but not in the active users - unless you are actually looking at the site.

The cookie is stored locally to your computer and your web browser looks at the cookie once you've come to the site.

Well unlike certain forums where you have to register to use virtually any forum, (and then they never post again) we leave a lot of the board open to casual visitors to enable people to see what we're about. Some forums we require people to be logged in - it's an incentive to people to register too once they've become interested and want to see the rest of the site. What's the big deal about logging in anyway?

AS Janice said, once you're logged in, you appear offline anyway after about 20 mins of no activity on your part. Pete's just worried about showing how much time he actually spends lurking. :D
