Welcome to Round 2 of the TP : Photographer of the Year 2007.
As usual, the competition rules are here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=15325).
Any questions, please feel free to ask.
Please use this thread to discuss the competition, and specifically the current round, and your interpretation of it. Also feel free to discuss ideas and thoughts etc. :) While there is an anonymous nature to the submissions and voting, there's no need to be secretive about ideas and the like. While we'd all like to win :D...the competition is for all of us to help improve our photography :)
So, on with this months theme, which is Still Life
The cut off for submissions to be received is 23:59 on the 28th February 2007
The winner of this round will receive an a4 or a3 sized print of their winning shot.
If you can hang on to your entries until i get the gallery and email fixed, that would be ace...
Not tried Still Life before so it's all new to me.

I've got 2 photos ready to send you, I just can't decide which one to submit :bonk:
I think this one is quite restrictive. With the lines for instance, that encompassed Lines in all categories like landscapes, portraits, still life, macros etce etc.
This is JUST still life!
Although I have 2 as well. (photos!!!) :naughty: :D

I've got a maybe but I want to try one more thing this weekend before I make my final decision...
Hmmm on nights at the moment, and am stuggling with ideas for this one, not even come up with any suggestions or ideas yet.

Thanks for the those ideas there are some great shots there and I might have come up with some ideas for both me and matt so hopefully that will be a couple more entries for this months comp. :)

I was kind of going on this quote from wikipedia as my guide to what still life could include
A "still life" is a work of art depicting inanimate subject matter, typically commonplace objects which may be either natural (flowers, game, sea shells and the like) or man-made (drinking glasses, foodstuffs, pipes, books and so on).
So I would think a rally car parked up would count, probably.....dont reveal too much about what you are going to enter as this is a kind of secret vote, where we arent suppose to know who has entered what....though it is fun trying to work it out sometimes :D

This was my first attempt at still life photography and I've done the best I can with the stuff I've got, but most importantly had some fun in the proccess :D

Why is it you can't give your photo a title? I can't see what would be given away unless you're putting a name on it which I'm not. It's not something I normally do but it suits my entry.
i dont see the harm in a title on the picture, but what we dont want is something that gives it away as a certain persons shot, so if someone always uses arial at 8pts at the bottom right then it might give it away a bit...

HMmmm day off tomorrow, but appart from food shopping, sorting my watch battery out, feeling sick, taking matt to work and picking him up, doing some washing and cleaning I have to come up with a shot as I am back at work on wednesday till 8:30 pm so I guess I could always sort it wednesday night when I get in from work.
You shouldve stayed home from one of the zoo trips and done some still life, Sue! :D
:) plenty of time yet, its not the last day of the month yet :lol: Sure I will come up with something I am reasonably happy with.

i recieved lots of entries up until 10pm last night (lets not go there..)i will go through the rest tonight and put the piccies up, we had over 20 last count, so i think we will be fine. Ive no problem with people changing entries, as longs as its not every few days....
I thought still life was gonna suck but I actually quite enjoyed it. Finally found a use for that Hama mini studio Matty made me buy. Just because I enjoyed it doesn't mean I was any good at it though. Can't wait to see what you all came up with.
i dont have access to the gallery at the moment(my isp hasnt caught up yet)i cant get on with the ip address, its painfully slow and falls over, so im afraid you will just have to wait to see the 35 entries tomorrow evening.

Glen, I think Rayfin know's we have to put them in order of preference he just questioned WHY?
I have to say that I can't see why either. Couldn't see last month how the image I picked as No1 accrued any more points on the scoring chart than that I picked as my No3.

I must admit I am totally confused by the scoring now I thought we were to just send our top three and then each entry was to get a fixed nuber of points depending what position they finished in.
Isnt it something along the lines of ... your 1st choice gets (not sure how many) say 3 points, 2nd gets 2 points, and 3rd choice gets 1 point.
Cant remember exactly but, I think there was a thread to explain somewhere.
I must admit I wouldn't mind a clarification either :shrug:

That's what I thought was hapening but the winner for last month got 37pts ??? as shown here (http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showpost.php?p=204233&postcount=65) although it does say a new table with points will be posted, have I missed that somewhere ?

Click on 'Galleries', above in the blue task bar, then click 'Photographer of the year - 2007' in the first catagory.
Its round 2, Feb.

the points for each round are for my benefit when scoring, the top 10 places are then allocated scores based on 10 - 1 points.

I think what people want to know is how the top10 places are determined - does the order that people rank their favourite 3 make a difference to where they come in the top10?
well we had this discussion already a few times, but the upshot is that the top 3 you pick, in order, determine the final postitions, i then turn the top positions into points, 10 for the winner etc for the yearly totals..the only thing missing is the scores for the year, which will be appearing when the voting is done for this round, if anyone wants to know how it stands at the moment, take the result table from the first round, take the first 10(or 11 as the last 2 are tied)and give them points from 10 - 1...
Is anyone still confused?

its points, not votes. If we went on votes, then there would be a lots of people finishing on the same figures, so points for the top 3 is best, its not complex, its just the way i explain it...honest

its really simple
you vote for your top 3 entries, i assign them points like this:
#1 = 3
#2 = 2
#1 = 1
this forms the ROUND results.
with me so far?
the top 10 in the round get the 'proper' points, 10 points for the win, down to 1 for tenth. this is incremental for the 12 rounds, giving us(we hope)an overall winner.
if you dont think about it, and just enter a photo every month, then its really very simple. Let us worry about the scores.

Arrrrggghh! Sorry about this ladies and gentlepeeps.
An unexpected requirement to reformat my machine this morning resulted in me putting Windows Vista on this afternoon....
Now everything is installed, but I cannot find my Microsoft Office disc anywhere. Im still looking!
Because it's a reformat, I've got half a file full of votes....a file full of names to tie those votes to people, and half a bucket load of PM's to sort through.
If I havent replied to some of you who have voted, then please also accept my apologies for that, everything has been up in the air these past couple of days.
Hold onto your seats, take hold of the oxygen masks, and normal service will be resumed very shortly.
If I cant find my CD this evening, I have a friend coming round tomorrow, and he's bringing his, and I will have the results up tomorrow night.

I thought that having to go into work for eight hours or so, I'd miss the results being posted.
Re-formating a PC is the easy part, getting all your stuff back on always takes ages and is a complete head ache, you have my sympathy.

I've given up with MS Office, and decided to give OpenOffice a try (cos its free :D)
Works great. Just need to make some head and tail of these results now. The filenames in the gallery, dont correspond with the list of usernames I have,..Have to manually go through and tie the votes in with the person...lol
As for the formatting. I actually enjoy a good wipe clean and reformat. It's good for my soul, I feel nice, clean and fresh after doing it..It's like having a good hot power shower in the morning with a fresh coffee.....but for geeks. :D
To think in my geeky heydey I used to format every few weeks....deliberately...lol

anyone able to lend some fingers to Marcel. He gets to 10 then struggles ;) he tried taking his socks off but that reset the computer.
Would it be an idea to reduce the length of time for voting?? possibly 3 days, as 7 may be too long, as you can see we all get a bit anxious waiting, then if there is a slight technical hitch when the votes are counted its over a quarter of the way into the next months challenge. Any thoughts on this?? :thinking:

Right, I've done!
Couldnt find my CD, so installed OpenOffice last night.
Got hafway through the spreadsheet and votes and had to go to bed.
Not had time today to do them, so have just finished going through them now.
I have to go and pick my daughter up from Brownies though, so I've collated the votes and scores, and matty is going to post the winners in a mo :thumbs:
