Hi

I got all excited this afternoon when I saw in the local camera shop a sigma 10-20....but sadly I am told the efs lens does not work on the 1d / 1d mk2 or the 1ds bodies

So what do you advise, what will work?

16-35L or 17-40L, depending on how rich you're feeling.

12-24mm EX DG Sigma is the widest available zoom, amazing on FF and gives about 18-36mm AOV on 1.3x crop. If you go for one of these make sure it's a sharp one some have sofness issues on one side.

Just sold mine as I am concentrating on the 1.6x crop of my 7d and so want a EF-s 10-22

sigma also do 15-30mm f3.5-4.5.

i'd recommend the canon 17-40mm f4, lovely lens and surprisingly small compared to some wideangles.

Many thanks.

I have a 24 -105. Is it worth having the extra 7mm?

I know where there is a s/h efs 10-22 for £299 if you are interested ED

Not tried any of the Sigma's but have a 17-40. If you can afford it go for it.

well i plan on having 17-40mm f4 and 70-200mm f2.8 with just the 50mm f1.8 for the inbetween.

i use the wideangle more than a normal 'walkabout' lens so don't see the need for one, you however, may find that you need the 24-105mm range more.

there is a massive difference between 24mm and 17mm...

I use the 24-105 for shooting portraits. Will look at the 17 -40mm, thanks

Another vote for the Canon 17-40 f/4.0 L

On a full-frame camera the corners get a bit soft (more an issue for landscapes than portraits), but your 1D will crop those off anyway.

Yet another vote for the Canon 17-40L here. I use it as a walkabout lens on my 1D.

If you head to the landscape section and look at my recent thread on the Isle of Wight. All of those pics were taken on a 1D with the 17-40L

Fantastic lens

The 14mm is rather nice and the 15mm fisheye is a lot of fun, too.

I use a 17-40 f4 too and very nice it is too. The Sigma 12-24 is insanely wide, but as Ed mentioned you do need to check it before buying - I picked one up recently and was very disapointed by the IQ, but loved the wide angle.

If you're feeling brave...

The Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens can be modded for the 1d.

There's a hint under the 'Modification' section here:

Much more detail here:

I use canon's 17-40 , 24 F1.4 and siggy12-24mm on a FF body.

Probably the most useful is the canon 17-40, the 12-24mm is great, dead sharp, but at 12mm you can see behind yourself, so it's use is limited, but can be devastatingly effective in the right place.

If I was to pick one out of the three it would be the 17-40, although the 24mm F1.4 is a better lens.

Aye, another vote for the 17-40 it's my 'kit' lens on my 1D but I also have a good old Peleng 8mm for when I feel silly :-)

You already have good recommendations in here, but I would like to add the Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4.0. Excellent for the price and almost as sharp as a Canon 17-40mm.
