i'll let you know shortly I have just bought the Tamron 17-50 2.8 to replace the 18-105....I do wonder if i'm gonna miss the VR :suspect:

Doubt you will miss the VR. Used to have a 18-105, then got an 18-70 and was surprised how much better the 18-70 was. Now have Nikon 17-55 2.8 which is obviously very nice.

I would be surprised if the nikon is as good as the tammy.

The Tamron is way better if you find a good copy.
I used to have one in Canon mount and it was an excellent zoom.
The AF is slow, the built construction is nothing special, but the optics are wonderful. You can't ask for more in this price range.
The lens is also compatible with "full-frame" sensors but, if you think you'll just use it on an APS-C body, the Tamron 17-50mm is also a good wider alternative.

The 18-70mm is probably the best kit lens that Nikon have produced...can be had dirt cheap 2nd hand (around £120). It's not the fastest lens around however optically it is very nice. :)

so the tamron would be a better option
wish they did one with a great range than 17-50, like the angle but missing the length so 28-75 is preferred
