View Full Version : D3 v D700
Just a quickie, to settle a pub discussion. :)
Apart of all the physical differences are there any differences in image output quality?
Is it the same sensor and ISO quality?
Thanks
P.S I'm talking about the current D3 not the new D3s

No. None that I've ever been able to see.

same sensor and image processor, the difference is in the other stuff like the D3 having 100% viewfinder coverage, dual CF card slots etc etc

I didn't realize how minimal the difference's are, as i've never viewed the 2 side by side like that before, quite surprising really when you consider the difference in the price, well it is to me anyway :)
D700 ... possibly the best digital camera Nikon have ever made.

i would choose it over the d3 for many reason
price and size being 2

At that price point I agree:thumbs:
I have both the D3 and D700. Picture quality is identical which is useful when using two cameras on the same shoot. When carying just one camera it tends to be the D700.

I'm guessing the focussing etc is a lot quicker on the D3, my D3 arrived last week and I'm amazed how much quicker to focus it is than the d300, I'm guessing this is similar to the d700?

also don't forget that if you're buying a grip, a D3 battery, and a D3 charger (to get 8fps)...the price difference from D700 to D3 gets a lot smaller... and gives you 2 cf card slots etc...and the fact that you own one of the best cameras in the world ;) and the build quality (you could hammer in nails with the D3...), handling and small ergonomic features that you can't quantify but make it a pleasure to use.
Is there a difference between the AF system of the two cameras?
Would the D700 handle some sports (basketball, BMXing, rugby) well?
I wonder if/when the D700s is released whether it will use the D3s sensor - with improved ISO.
Cheers.

Same AF system in both.
But you wont get as hight fps without the grip on the d700

if u were you d3 if you have enough budget. d3s is much more impressive...
There's no point in buying a D3 (or D3s) unless you are a professional press, sports or action photographer. It's a waste of money, the D700 will do everything you will need and costs you less and generally be better to use (smaller and lighter, also cheaper to maintain...since D3's cost more to repair. I just got a quote from Fixation for the repair of the protecter shutter thing on the rear eyepiece of one of mine for over £280).
