View Full Version : Street
As some of you know there is a competition a few of us enter. This time the theme is "Street", a god aweful theme picked by some silly person ;) Anyways, as usual I am having trouble deciding which shot to enter.

My current favourite. It literally says "street" but doesn't really say "street".
hmm i dunno
Pete you need to resize a couple, they are 800+ on the long side, 700 is the forum limit(please, thanks)
i shouldnt comment on them, cos im entering the same thing..
BUT
i do have a preference.....
when you resize them, i will tell you....
Whoops sorry :) I did them for 700 wide, and under 140k but then I forgot about 700 high :)
The first for me, as in the context of the competition title it should do very well. It's got great texture and contrast and I really like the silhouette and shadow of the walker. I like the steps although I'm sure some folk would say they're a distraction. I'm not really sure any of the others do it as most of them seem more like alleys.

Its a tricky theme. While I was the person who chose it, I didn't realise that "Street" lliterally means "Street". I was hoping to do some street photography, but it doesn't quite say "street". As nice as the first shot is, someone else has already taken a similar shot. I would prefer to be unique :)

all this could be avoided simply by having an on site gallery...

I like 1, and i like the one with the girl looking back toward camera, colour version and BW version, also yobs is a good one..
i have one of my own to post later...not sure about it really

The first one is probably the best really. While the girl shot is nice, its just a girl on the street. The same for the guys, just some people on the street. Gah :) Its about this time when something goes click in my head and I get an idea....... *bangs head on desk* ... Nothing yet :)
I like the first one, it's been done before, but it's well executed and suits the theme I would think. I like the range of tones in the one with the steps, but it has to be the feet shot for me. I think you had actually 'clicked' with the bird in the boots!
i was thinking about this one...

although busking is a street pastime, im not entirely sure it fits the theme...
I know what you mean. Its on the street, but does it say street? Does a road say road or street? Ahhh, I'm such a fool :)
its your fault pete, its your theme!!!
I like the first one, where is the top view of the street.
Where can I found the info of that "street" competition?

well before i point you in that direction i would remind you we have our own competition running here, round 2 has just started and its 'architecture'(or something)
street comp is on the OCUK forums
I prefer the next to last one, the orange light coming through the window and the legs passing by on the street. This picture provokes so much thought about what goes on under and around the street, how it interacts and yet people can pass by oblivious. This would be my definite choice as it is so strong.

Arquitecture sounds great to me, I dont have pictures of arquitecture, so its a good time to start, i will look for the bases.
Thanks EosD

Steve beat me to that one :) I also thought that was an excellent one for basically the same reason.

I think this says street more than road or anything else, because, to me, a street is something that is in a tightly packed city. (A road is in the contry-side. A boulevard or avenue in a city too, but in the grand or cerimonial part of the city.) And when you get windows and living space down at "street level" like this, it just exudes that tight and cramped feeling. The passer-by also adds to this feeling.
Really a great job, Pete :)
BTW: This would work for the arcitecture theme as well

Thanks :) I think my heads spun around far too much with this street theme that I'll be glad to go out and find some nice architecture to shoot :)
First one is easily the best one, the others are a bit 'ho-hum' IMO. Crop in tighter to get rid of the steps on the top left of the image and it'll be even better.
The others look a little over-processed to me - way too much contrast in the shot of the girl and the mono copies don't really improve them much either.

Hmm :) If i crop the first one, it will change the placement of the person in it. I don't know if it will have the same weight. As for the over-processing, it doesn't look too bad to me. I just boosted the colours to make them look nicer. I thought the black and white shots were quite nice myself. Its very hard to take decent black and white photos with digital, it just can't produce decent texture or feeling.
I'll play a bit of devils's advocate and say the first one doesn't really say street to me. It says Steps to the town hall, maybe a square. In any case it's a 100 times better than anything I have :)
One which struck me was the balloon seller. Not him in particular but the eye contact of the woman looking at you.

Yer I don't feel the first says street either. I do like that shot with the woman making eye contact.
Some great photo's there!
But personaly i feel the second to last one, the one you have just entered is the weekest of the lot by a mile!
My favorites are the colour version of the girl, the ballloon one because of the look on the lady's face and the one below it. I also really like all of the high contrasty one's, really like that style. The only one i don't like is the one of the feet/cellor.
I might regret saying this when u change ur entry and win the compo again!!!

So basically, theres no definitive best shot :) Some people don't like the cellar/feet shot, some don't like the high contrast shots, and the first shot doesn't quite fit the theme. I guess I'll just have to try something else :)

I beg to differ. It's easy if you know what to do. Remember that digital doesn't have the exposure latitude that film has. You may have to use several layers to achieve the right result - this took me five minutes in Photoshop using a layer mask to edit two images, one edited for the highlight detail and one for the skin tones and shadows.
It could be better if I'd taken longer. The tools are there, but we have to know what to do with them - being good with film is one thing, but some things we need to re-learn in digital to achieve the same results.

Definately the first one for me, it seems the most natural. As Arkady said, losing the steps would improve it no end.
Arkady, If you get the time to do a quick tutorial on making decent b&w images in PS that would be really handy.
Judging by your Covent garden shots, you're almost there. I will do a 'quick and dirty' version of some techniques though...

Anything is easy if you know how to do it ;) I have a very nice book on Digital Black and White photography and I'm sure with practice I will be able to take better black and white shots. Its something I love to produce. I just feel that I look at some black and white shots and think that they would be impossible to take on digital without a few days work in Photoshop. It annoys me :)
I went out yesterday and I now have a shot that I feel good about.

I think it fits the rule of thirds, is has a nice depth of field, nice lighting and the guy looking back at me. I don't know if its a winning shot, but to me it says "Street" and I feel good about it.

Nice one, All seems to fit in to place as you say. Even the way the light falls across where they are crossing. No matter what happens in the competition is the feeling good about a shot that counts. We all now that feeling, shame it doesnt come a bit more often.
that is nice Pete, brochure like!
Thanks guys :) I only waited for about an hour for the right people to walk into the frame :)
Yep - that last shot is a cracker. 8)
Spot on, as is the amount of photoshopping.
The way the guy is looking back is perfect.
Thanks :D Took a few hours to get it perfect what with waiting for the perfect people to get infront of the lens and then the photoshopping :)
Although I do like the last picture here, I still prefer the "feet lit by the orange window" shot. I just think it works on more levels.
Just my 2p

Doh :) I'm not going out now to find a better shot ;)
