I know I have asked this question before so excuse me if I'm boring. Which would be the best lens for me to buy for motorsport/ planes etc - a nIkon 200-400 or a 300 f2.8, both VR lenses. I know there is a difference in price:bang:

Really for motorsport I'd go for the 300mm but really you need another camera with around a 75-180 Zoom as well

Hi Philip - I have also a 70-200 VR f2.8 zoom which will cover this end. Thanks:clap:

Moving to Talk Equipment as the Motorsport section is for image sharing/critique.

Wasn't sure about this as I thought motorsporty people with knowledge of suitable lenses for this activity would be on the motorsport forum. Lesson learnt. Embarrassed

Price wise the 300mm f2.8 would be more suited. The 200-400mm f4 is a great lens, but at £4500 its pricey. As most motorsports / aviation need 300mm or more (you have the 70-200mm to cover gap), the 300mm f2.8 on it's own or with 1.4x or 1.7x or 2x would mean you've got at least 2 lenses in 1. At Airshows the display line is constantly moving away from the crowd, so the TC's are required. Another plus for the 300mm f2.8 is the extra f-stop for poor conditions, faster lens will get you out of a whole more than once.

Need to buy a 2x TC for my canon 300mm to try it out.
