Taken with my Nikon E995 at night ! I doubt i would ever get it to do that again ! lol
i like that, great sense of movement!
That is good one!!
What rally was that?
Glad you like it :) was a real fluke picture !
The rally was in Oregon in Americas Pacific Northwest, cant remember what it was called though, was in 2002, the guys in the Picture (Mark Lovell and Roger Freeman, both Brits) are dead now unfortunately, they were killed while rallying in the US.

Oh yes you would if you didn't have 2nd curtain sync on your camera.

Erm ! lol i better look that up ! ;)
Actually I just realised a 995 isn't an SLR. 2nd curtain sync is peculiar to a focal plane shutter which is what SLRs and DSLRs have and without that setting you can get blurring in front of fast moving objects rather than behind them. It looks very odd.
I'm guessing what happened is that you took the pic with flash? With modern electronic flash the duration is extremely intense and very short, much shorter than your shutter speed (Often around 1/50000 sec or less) , with the result that the shutter is still open after the flash dies. You can actually get ghost images in very bright light from moving objects still moving after the flash has died and before the shutter closes. In this case the very bright lights have registered the movement of the car after the flash died even though it was too dark for the rest of the car to register.
That Scoob must have been really shifting though!

Yeah the 995 isnt an SLR, i panned while taking the pic, the built in flash on a 995 is pretty useless ! I picked up my 20D today now got to try and learn how to use that properly lol
and yes, the Scoob was doing about 80mph, if you know 995's lack of zoom lens, i was actually that far from the car !!!!!!!
I only just got my 20D. You'll love it! 8)

From the little i have seen since i picked it up, i do love it and am also terrified of it !! lol I have an EOS50E as well, am just worried all my flukey pics are now going to be a thing of the past ! lol ;)
Just stick it on AP or TV. The exposure system is spot on. What's really impressed me is the battery life - I've not managed to run the battery down yet on a full days shooting.
This is a great picture that will obviously bring back fond memories. The problem with it though is that it gives the impression of the car going really fast..BACKWARDS :D

ROFLMAO !!!! Yeah i know what you mean Steve !
Yes dont let the 20D intimidate you, its a very user friendly camera. If I can use one anyone can. Get a large CF card in the baby and shoot, shoot, shoot. Play with the different settings and see what works and what doesn't. There is nothing like hands on experience to learn from and remember one of the big advantages of digital is that as long as you are not printing everything out, its free ;)

:) Yeah am hopefully going to try it out over the weekend ! I looked at a 350D but found it way too small for my hamfisted paws to hold comfortably ! So had to take a deep breath and dig deep to go up a notch on the camera scale ! lol fortunately my EOS50 lenses fit it ! will just have to wait longer for the upgrade i was going to do on them ! lol

bad to hear that.
I'm a rally driver here in México, not professional, just my hobbie, and try to practice it a lot, but its too expensive. The cars have a lot of protection, but you never know.
returning to the photo stuff, well that 20D you got, wow its awsome camera, I want one, but my car doesn't let me jejeje,
as they told you, using the 1st and 2nd curtain flash options is fun, you can get so different feeling on the same photo.
Yep! Another 'reversing at high speed' shot caused by using front curtain synch instead of rear-curtain synch. try also using slow synch to allow more ambient light into the shot - meter normally and the flash will freeze the action whilst retaining all of the background detail.

I'm thinking your panning was a little too quick there, It's hard enough to get right in the sunshine so at night it must have been really tricky
nice shot all the same :)

Yeah it was flippin tricky, was actually darker than the pic makes it look too and the dust filling the air from the car that went through less than a minute earlier made it tricky too, lol car went past about 8 feet away doing 80'ish mph, and i did a quick pan and shoot, i got one other pic similar but half the car is missing from that shot, so was one of the flukiest fluke shots i have ever taken ! :)
I like the pic, even though it does look like it goes backwards ! lol and considering the 995 has no decent zoom, isnt a DSLR, and had a muppet working it ! ;)
