View Full Version : Sigma 80-400mm
Been offered a Sigma 80-400mm and i am very tempted.
Have read a few mixed reviews, but people seem to compare it to the Canon lens but that seems to cost a lot more.
What i'm unsure of is how much should i be paying for it.
Anybody got a rough price if its in good condition.
I have one and have had what I would consider to be excellent results. As for price, no idea. I can only suggest searching ebay for current and finished listings and see if any were sold in recent times.

Best bet is to do a search on eBay or with 2nd hand camera shops like ffordes, mifsuds, MBP etc. Sigma don't make this lens anymore, its been replaced by the current selection of budget zooms like the 120-400mm. A friend has this lens and uses it with his canon 350D. The autofocus is slow, so if your taking action shots, then you would have to adapt you technique, i.e. it not fast enough for a burst of images. It take good shots in good light conditions, but performance drops off considerably when the light falls off. There was about a £200 difference new between that lens and the canon 100-400mm new, so I would say a used price of £500-600 depending on condition because used prices have gone up since the weakening of the £. Also remember sigma lens bodies are prone to flaking paint, so body work might look worse than it actually is. Best advice is ask to borrow it and take some images in different situations.
Cheers
I think he wants around £430 but should be able to get it for slightly less.
I had read about the autofocus not being fast but i do have a 70-200mm f2.8 for that.
Alternatively i could just buy a convertor for mine but the lens seems a good buy.
I recently bought the siggy 80-400mm APO OS .Optics are in mint condition and body in very good+ condition, you could tell it had been handled but no obviuos signs of wear to the finish.
I payed £320 collected in person from a very discerning photography lecturer.
Although it was not boxed i am more than happy with it.
On ebay they seem to be advertised with a buy it now price of between £425 and £485.
Hope this helps.
