I took my Infrared filter with me yesterday to try out the custom white balance trick. It worked, after a fashion.

I wanted to try and do something different for the competition too. I wanted to show busy streets, and I knew a 30 second IR shot would do it. I just didn't feel they worked well enough.

I really really need a wide angle lens and an IR filter.

What you need is one person to stand totally still while everything else blurs out - it's a very effective trick. On a city street, try a 'suit' reading a broadsheet newspaper - works every time. Better still, do it in Fleet Street.
Yer definetly. I was thinking that while I was out. Annoyingly Infrared shots need 30 second exposure times so having someone stand perfectly still for 30 seconds is a little tricky :)
Pete, don’t make the mistake of posting any pictures that you might be considering for entry into our competition as they make it easy to identify you by. As the competition relies on not knowing who has submitted what, I would be forced to disqualify your entry.
Just a friendly head up :)

As soon as I saw your name it hit me. I'm an idiot! A TOTAL IDIOT! :) Well I'll just have to go out and take an even better picture now. Er... :) Its too late now really as I posted them elsewhere and its not fair to remove them on the others as they have been show publically. Damn my addicition to forums!
Don't worry to much, you still have a couple of weeks till this round closes and if I know you, you will be out taking pictures right up to the last minute of the deadline

Me? :) You know it :D
I really like some of these! The first one, the colour of the sky and the strength of the building are great. Second one i am not so sure about, a little dirty to me. The 3rd one is kinda ghost-like and there is something about that one which really appeals to me, maybe i'd like to see just a little more detail in the blur just so as i know what i am looking at. maybe a face or to that have stopped for just 5secs or so would look good.

Yer I wasn't really sure about the 2nd one either. It doesn't seem quite right. The 3rd really would have been great if someone had stopped. I kept hoping, but no-one did :)

You should have forced Dave to stand still in the picture

I'm currently fully-booked for statue work, thanx.
i do like the technique behind these, its a good effect, i definately would have liked to see a shot with less shutter time, but as youve said, thats tricky...

Next time I'm out I'll try a higher ISO. Noiseware should be able to solve any problems.

I don't know of this - clue me in somebody please?

You hold up a blank piece of white paper and take a shot. Then you set the custom white balance to that picture.
I know about custom white balance - it was the IR filter trick I was referring to...
Presumably you're referring to performing the CWB with some kind of filter on...yes?
What filter?

They got me on this too. Unlike conventional IR with IR film and a red filter, you need an actual IR filter for digital. I think the CWB trick is a workaround for not having a filter.

Nah. You setup the shot and put the Hoya R72 IR filter on. Then you take a long exposure of a blank piece of paper and set the custom white balance to that. Then you take the IR shots. This helps fix the colours later on in Photoshop.

Aha.. been meaning to ask about this for a while, but keep forgetting. Basically, because I still have a freezer full of Kodak High Speed IR film, I've never taken a digital IR shot in my life. Don't most chips have a IR filter over them? Just give me a quick low down on what the hell you're on about please...
I put a wratten IR filter over a digital cam, and I get a colour shifted IR image, than I can then correct in PS to give me a colour IR image similar to Kodak colour IR film? That easy? Wouldn't exposure be VERY long, especially as most cams have a IR blocking filter over the chip anyway.
Hmm... interesting tho.
I used to teach IR photography to students using D1s and D100's in total darkness, using a kodak wratten filter taped over the head of an SB28 flash. It's pretty good up to about 10m. We used it for recording stuff that needed to be done in total darkness.
I'll have to leave it to your imagination as to what that might have been, I'm afraid.
Both Nikons were pretty good with this - the image came out very red and we used to convert to Mono for the end results to give better contrast for recording purposes.
No good for 'Happy Snaps' tho' as the quality was pretty dismal - much as conventional IR film is under the same conditions.
I have loads in the freezer too... any offers?
So it's just a HOYA R72 IR filter then?
Guide exposures in bright sunlight, please?
