Memory cards advice

Hi , In the old days of " FILM " I had a full understanding of the different types to us / available :D

But I am totally confused regarding the huge range of cards on offer

I have just updated my compact , from a Canon G5 to a G11

And my DSLR from a Canon 10D to a D5 mk2

so before I go and buy the wrong type of cards can anyone help or point me in the direction of a web page that has the required info ?

Can't speak for the G11, but I swear by the Sandisk Extreme Compact Flash cards for the 5D Mark II.

I use the Extreme IVs (8GB UDMA) and the performance is excellent. It needs to write loads of data to the card, as although the 5D Mk II is slow at 3.9fps, the resolution is huge and data files are large when shooting RAW.

Have never had an Extreme 3 or 4 corrupt on me, they're a card I trust...

Yep, as above, Sandisk. I have two 8GB Extreme III SDHC cards. They have never let me down.

I always use Sandisk. I have 4 4gb Extreme ducati cards and a few Extreme IV's. Never let me down.
I wouldn't even bother looking at ebay if you are thinking of it as an option. Vast majority are fakes. ;)

SanDisk are the market leaders at the quality end, and given the low cost of memory as compared to the value of your images - why bother going for something cheaper? I use the Extreme IIIs with my G9. The FPS of the Canon Gs aren't really high enough to warrant the step up to the Extreme IV. You're far more likely to be waiting on the autofocus than the memory card. I'd also recommend going with 4GB cards in case of failure. I also love the LowePro Pixel Packs for transporting them safely.

Just out of interest, how long after you shove a SanDisk Extreme 111 4gb card into your camera card slot before you can take shots? In my D200 it takes 15 seconds which seems forever. My Ultra 11 1gb cards are almost instant and seem to write every bit as fast. Could my 4gb one be faulty? It's not a copy, unless Jessops sell copies.

for me, my extreme 3s are instant. however I am on SD cards not CF (if that makes a difference)

I've got the new Sandisk Extreme cards too. Although I use cheap Transcend cards in my Lumix TZ7.

Sandisk Ultra (SDHC) for me. More than fast enough for my needs.
