Don't want to sound stupid but how do you focus to infinity?
If you have a lens with a focus scale on it, just set the marker to the infinity sign

there isn't any figure 8 sign on mine. any suggestions how this can be done?
Without a scale you need to AF on something at an infinite distance.
Infinity distance varies with focal length but with that lens even at 55mm it should not be too far away so try the furthest lamp post or chimney pot or something, then switch the lens to manual focus and it's set. Put a mark on the barrel for future reference.
For absolute infinity with any lens, the moon is handy :D
Edit: live view is very good for critcal focusing.

In manual focus, turn the focus ring all the way to the left for infinity.

That will take it past infinity. AF lenses focus past infinity because the AF system needs to see beyond infinity so they know where to stop.
