What do they do, i am purchasing a new lens this week and it comes with lens hood, what is its main function?

Protection, and reducing flare. But mostly protection imo :P

Protection and stops lens flare , however i find the petal ones a pain in the arse. You have to line it up correctly then tighten it in but turn the camera on it's side and the petals made the corners black thus you have to move it again. :(

I not understand you comments if it fitted for landscape and you turn your camera then it is still in the same place for the format of the view. As for problems fitting it you just put it on with a twist nothing to tight up? Or are you using HK ones?

Gen ones fit and do not need tighing up as for turning your camera I dont understand this one bit
