I have been looking for a sigma 30 f1.4 canon mount for a while. Second hand ones seem expensive or go before I see them.

They're Hong Kong based, but many people here have used them and haven't had a problem with tax/duty. Apparently if you are charged these fees at a later date, Onestop will refund them.
I got my copy of the lens 2nd hand on another forum and absolutely love it! :thumbs:

A little bit OT, but the OP may find this useful also; has anybody you know of had to pay tax/duty at a later date when ordering from Onestop? And if they did, whether Onestop did indeed refund this? Also, if the item is defective, how long does it take/how expensive is the postage back to HK to get a replacement?

Gosh £260 there that saved me £35
I have heard some of these have had front focus issues, I wonder how many and how bad. One of the attractions of buying new would be that I could swap it if I got a dodgy one. Not sure how easy that would be if from HK. If it's only an occasional dodgy one I am happy to give onestop a go. They seem to go for £250 second hand.

If you get a good copy you'll love it. Fortunately for me I got a mint one with no issues for £180 2nd hand in February, which was probably the best camera bargain I've had so far :D

So I went for the onestop digital option and the lens just arrived. Stuck it on the 40d took some pics of a page of text at a sloping angle and it is clearly front focusing a little. It doesn't seem to be an issue when focusing on things at greater distance or maybe that is just because the depth of field is greater?
Anyway, I did hear something about getting the lens recalibrated? but then having bought the lens cheap from Hong Kong maybe I can't do that I don't know. Any advice gratefully received. It may be that I just learn to work with it as it is but if there is an easy fix it would be good to know.

Lots of lens' focus is slightly out anyway but easily adjusted in camera especially for a prime so what's the point in getting calibrated? (which you can over here if need be, for a price).
My copy does slightly too but am more than happy with it following the in camera adjustment.

The only way to get the lens fixed is to send it back to HK.
Sigma UK will not fix it for free as you do not have a valid warranty here (as you didn't import it legally and pay the appropriate VAT).
Chances are your camera is out-of-whack not the lens anyhow. This is the usual cause of front or back focus issues with fast lenses (most bodies are calibrated to be accurate at f/5.6)
Most lenses (or bodies) front or back focus to some degree. My EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 is a peach of a lens, but it needs me to dial +5 micro adjustment to be pin sharp on a 7D. Without this adjustment it front focuses by several inches whenever I take close range shots. An f/1.4 lens has a wafer thin DOF and any slight misfocus will look worse than it really is.
The only lens I own that is 100% dead-on at all focal ranges is my 70-200mm f/4 IS. All other lenses (50mm f/1.8, 24-105mm f/4, 60mm f/2.8, 100-400mm) have required small in-camera adjustments to get the best out of them. Bizarely all of my lenses which require adjustment front focus, so perhaps it is a design trait of Canon bodies rather than lens issues.
I know the 40D does not support micro adjustment, so a front focussing lens will be more of an issue. Perhaps post some pic so that we can determine how far out things are. You probably won't have to send the lens back unless it is really bad.
If you want to be really sure than the lens is at fault you will need to try it out on several bodies.

they will recalibrate a sigma lens for about 40 quid all in I think
having said that, well, you've just bought it...BAH
one reason to get a 50D or 7D for me would be the micro adjustments
how close are you focusing though???
the 30mm is no where close to being a macro lens.
