I have just received a Nifty Fifty (again) and i don't remember my other one being like this (must just be me).
Should there be any play in the middle part of the lens that attaches to the body?
There seems to be a fair amount and i don't re-call my other one being like this.
Sorry i don't know correct terms for the parts.

Not as far as I know- only the end (focusing ring) should rotate.

There are two types of 50mm f1.8:

MkI: Metal mount

MkII: Plastic mount

Might not be relevant??>>>

Ah yes, sorry- I was talking about the mk2.

Just checked my setup mark II, a tiny click when twisted but no movement.

It's the mk2.

The coloured area is what's moving.
There seems to be quite a lot of movement form side to side.

Hope this makes sense.

That will be the awful build quality, but just like Patterson enlargers of years gone bye, all the sloppiness seems to cross adjust itself and somehow despite itself it still gets good results.

Mine (mkII) has a little play (probably about 1 mm).
Have had it for about 6 months and it doesnt seem to affect it.

Mine's rock solid - no movement at all.
The knurled focus ring (the wider ring below your marked area) has about 0.5 mm slack (rotational only) but that has no significance, I think.

Mine has about 1mm of play fully extended but wound in half way and no movement, but as said above focus and sharpness don't seem to be affected at all.

Mine rattles about like a jar of sweeties but still takes decent pics.
