Help needed, is the Sigma 10-20mm anygood? Also, is there any equivalent (canon, tamron(are tamron anygood))?
Just trying to persuade the GF to getting the Sigma.

Cheers

Send kerso a PM. He can usually get them quite cheap. Bought a D200 grip and a 30mm f/1.4 from him. Excelent service.

Let him know I pointed you in his direction.

You must have missed my posts :D Some of my 10-20 shots (http://www.vanilladays.com/?s=10-20&search=search). All I use is that and the 24-70.

Ok, I'm convinced I want 1. Can I then throw my kit lense in the bin :D or replace it?

Assuming you are a Canon user, then yes you can!

But you might need a mid-telephoto zoom....

Kerso recently quoted me 285 + p&p you can't get a used one for much less than that on Fleabay (I know I tried). It is the next lens on my list but I'm waiting to buy it in the states *** well it is cheaper!

Just out of interest...do Canon do an equivalent, and if so, any good?

They do. Its a Canon 10-22. I hear that its technically better but for the most part you'd never know. Its also £200 more.

Blimey...£200 extra just for the name? What a rip off. I know your 10-20 is hardly ever off your camera, which is an excellent advert.

Blast my Tamron 28-74 is a f2.8

Am I right in thinking the Sigma 10-20 is only f4.5-5.6 ?

Close its F4.0-5.6

Canon EF-s 10-22 is F3.5-4.5 but as stated is almost double the price.

Its f4-5.6 but due to it being 10mm you can use it at 1/10th and get away with shots. Hell I've hand held at 1 second with it :)

Not sure myself.

I've not used the sigma or canon 10-22 but it's said that the sigma doesn't offer quite the image quality of it's big brother the 12-24.

If that's true and the canon is no better than the sigma then it must be one of canon's poorest offerings.

Getting a superwide zoom to give a decent image would seem to one of the biggest challenges in lens design. I know we've all seen great images here taken with all the various superwides but at that size, my phone will produce a decent image. It's looking at the detail in real full size close up that tells the full story.

Luckily for all of us, much of the time the shots we look to use these lenses for don't really on great detail but on pure composition and perspective. In these cases, some pretty poor detail quality can pass by un-noticed.

I've been reading a few things about this lense and the Cokin P-series filters... does anyone know how wide you can go with this lense before the edges of the P-series holder become visible?

Sorry but I was glad I spend £200 more on the Canon version. It offers better image quality that I saw reviewed online and decided I would buy this to make sure any disapointments were to a minimal.

A recent magazine this month reviews the Nikon, Canon, Sigma & tammy.

The Sigma gets a really poor round up, the Canons was better but had its own problems (just not as many) The Nikon rated top.

I also got £70 cashback for the EF-s 10 -22. The advantage of the others is that they are compatable with FF cameras.

The Sigma 10-22 is crop sensor only too, the 12-24 is FF compatable but much more expensive though.

Sigma 10 - 20 I think you mean. Yeah the 12 - 24 is a much better option for users thinking of moving to FF

You will see a small amount of vignetting at 10mm, at 12mm it goes completely in my experience. This is a great lens by the way, the EX glass is superb.

Well that was the obvious answer  . I tried some hand held HDR on saturday, only looked at one of them so far and it didn't look too great, I guess I need more practice :(

I just read this review (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/digital-wide-zooms/comparison.htm) which was quite interesting. Can't comment really myself as I don't have any of these lenses, although I was about to buy a Sigma. This article reckons the Tokina is better, but then it's only one person's view. Anyone have the Tokina lens?

petemc
05-03-2007, 12:35
I find my Sigma is very well built, nice and solid. Its been sharp enough for my clients and for my tastes. I'm sure it could be sharper but I'm happy with it. The Tokina is meant to be better, but I wanted the widest lens I could get. I didn't want to think "If only I had got the wider one." I was just tired of missing things.

Ian T

It's the 12mm that puts me off. My current lens goes as short as 17mm, so to make it worthwhile I'd be wanting to go down to 10mm. To be honest, if you're happy with it, and plenty of other people on here seem to be, then I don't see how I can go wrong.

My sister has the canon 10-22 and tbh I cannot see any difference between shots with that or my sigma 10-20 having used both.
I cut off the first two slots off my P series holder, it can only take one filter now but I can use it at 10mm.

Go and test all of them out at a shop with your camera, as it sems the reviews are quite conflicting, I bought mine last year (Sigma) after reading the review in DP mag. Sigma was equal with the Canon, the Canon had the edge with the other 2mm, but the Sigma stole it back with the price.....give em all a try, you know it makes sense.

dont forget that Sigma are very strict regarding Grey Imports. Sigma UK will not honour warranties for non-uk lenses. Of course if you buy it in the UK you get a 3 year warranty, which is nice.:)

I love my Sigma 10-20 (the New York pics earlier in this thread were mine) and couldn't live without it now. I had the usual Sigma/Tokina/Nikon thoughts, but to be honest 10mm really is significantly wider than 12mm, it amazed me how much so. That was enough for me as I honestly don't notice small differences in detail/resolution etc.

The build quality is superb, I went without a tripod but managed exposures up to 20 seconds (usually 5-8) in many places simply because I felt confident holding it firmly down on a wall/girder/fence post etc without any risk of damaging it.

I've even shot some motorsport on it...

Got mine.. haven´t took it out and about yet but look.. it´s wide and although you won´t tell on these test shots because I literally put it on and shot without sorting lighting etc... (the best ones have me in them and you´re not getting them) it is a sharp lens and very very very good so far. Nikon fit by the way.
