Just came across this video (youtube) which I thought was interesting.
Some serious Big Glass in there too, but it looks like I could get by with my weedy 70-300 and still get decent pics if our eagles came this close.
(mods - wasn't sure if this should go in 'Talk Photography' or 'Out of focus' so please moved if you want).

I was surprised at the flashes they were using with those 'zoom flash head things' (proper technical term that you know ;) :D ). Do they really work in daylight over the distances some of the photogs were using them at?

They're just fresnel screens in front of a standard flash gun, I use the same myself. Put one in front of a decent flash (SB800/580EX) and it will concentrate the flash into a narrower beam and throw it great distances.
The main problem is eye-shine/steel-eye... the natural world's equivilant of red-eye. You need to get the flash gun off-axis from the lens as much as possible, either raising it way above the lens or off to the side... even then, chances are you'll need to do some photoshop work.
cheers,
Andy
thanks for posting that movie, it was superb.
This guy has got some excellent images of Bald Eagles, most of them at 200mm, it's worth 10 minutes to view his gallery.
