Attended the D3 Sales Rep seminar last night. Confirmed: D3 announcement on Monday

Jim Seaholm, Mar 03, 2007; 02:30 p.m.

Last night I attended a Nikon sales rep seminar in Los Angeles, where Nikon's D3 was unveiled to an audience consisting of L.A. area Advanced Systems Dealers and myself.

Courtesy of my cousin, who is a salesperson at a major Los Angeles Nikon retailer, I was able to get credentials and attend the 45 minute meeting with him.

All camera cell phones were checked at the door, as we entered the meeting room. The LA sales rep revealed the D3 which was partially wrapped in black gaffers tape so as to disguise key elements of its appearance. For about 30 minutes, the sales rep talked to the assembled audience about Nikon's latest offering which is to be unveiled on Monday, March 5th at PMA:

- Full Frame (no 1.1 crap) - DX mode at 1.5x - High Speed Crop - VERY fast motor drive (can't remember the number he quoted, but when he fired it, it sounded at least as fast as my F5 on CH. - 18.7 MB - MSRP $7999 - No H and X models anymore, just the one D3 - D2xs will continue to sell. - Dimensions and weight were mentioned, but I don't remember the minutae. Suffice to say, the camera looked to be roughly the same size as the D2 series.

The camera was fitted with another new release: an undisguised 50mm 1.2G AF-S lens, which looked to be quite large and sturdy. Also mentioned but not present was a 24-120 2.8G AF-S. The rep said no new DX lenses were forthcoming in the near future.

So there you have it. End of rumors. We'll all see it undisguised on Monday. So relax, its here.

Regards,

Jim

Sounds interesting enough. If they make it to take canon lenses I could well get in line for one. ;)

Seriously? In the words of Arnie, thats "one ugly mf" and looks guaranteed to give wrist injury. Spec looks good though

I dont believe this until I see an official press release.

Looks like it's made by Tomy. Would have expected a real preview to use a real photoshopped body not a drawing.

That preview pic has been floating around the net for about a year.

mr Ken Rockwell himself has it on his site...but since most of what he says you have to take with a near fatal dose of salt its easy to realise how far from the truth it all is.

If it happens at all...
It'll probably look more like the D2 series cameras as re-tooling after such a short time would be prohibitively expensive, even for Nikon.
D1x/H shared the body of the older D1, so there's every reason to suppose the D3 will share that of the D2.
I hope so as it's the most ergonomic camera I've used so far.
18Mpi? Too much for me I'm afraid - I'm getting enough Flak as it is from the Master Phot and Div Phot for shooting RAW/NEF - they want me to shoot JPEG/High to save on storage space...
Ho-Hum...

If I used an 18Mpi camera full-frame on RAW it'd probably be generating a NEF image at about 30-35Mb, which would open to a 65-70Mb TIFF at 8-bit compression.

New computer needed with about 4Gb RAM to run images that big in PS(3?), bigger hard drives - two 1Tb HDD for back-up... it goes on and on.

The D2x is fully capable of producing an A1 print at better-than photo quality (assuming 100iso neg film vs 100iso Digi), so I'd rather Nikon spent the money sorting the noise quality out on the existing system.

Come on Nikon, bring some new gear out so I can buy the d2x cheaper!

What a truly ugly attempt at a camera...

I really hope this is a hoax but thank goodness for Canon anyway.

Anton you can rest easy as it does appear the original article I posted is a croad of lap - why people feel the need to come up with these elaborate hoaxes annoys the hell out of me :bang:
PMA 2007 has been running in US for a couple of days now and the D40x is the main Nikon "news"
Oh well ... Paul ;)

Wow, that was a brave move by nikon offering that amount of tech in a budget camera.

nice to see the availability of a 55-200 VR, 70-300 VR budget lenses now too! I think they are starting to pull their finger out. Hopefully they will bring us the 70-200 VR in a DX format lens with f2.8 constant aperture. That would be yummy hummy.

I'm quite happy with what they do right now. I like this format. FF will mean I have to carry an extra lens (300mm) to get the shots I get now with the 70-200 + 2x converter.

All I want them to do is sort the noise issue out. Save the research money and bring the unit price of a D2x down to £1500.

Very fair comment there Ark.

Let's face it all you fellow Canonites: If Nikon brings out a FF sensor with their current pixel density it will be one seriously kick-**s camera...

Would hate to have those file sizes though...:D
