Your all probably fed up with givin lense advice to numpty's but here goes.

I'm going to invest in a longer zoom for me 450d, budget £400, narrowed it down to the Canon 70-300 IS USM or the new Sigma 70-300 DG OS.
Any thoughts on these or other recommendations would be appreciated.

Mr Pumpy what lenses do you currently use? what type of photography? do you want to replace your lenses with one or add to your options?

I think we need some more info here.

Hi & Welcome

Not personally used the Sigma, but can def recomend the Canon 70-300IS lens. You've already got a good lens in the 28-135IS.

Budget wise, the Canon 55-250IS might be worth a look for you if you want something a little cheaper, slightly shorter focal length lens, but very highly rated

Canon 70-300 IS is excellent  But be aware that if you want to shoot birds it's not very long. 300mm seems to be a bit of a limit for long lens photography - over that, the lenses get big and much more expensive. Perfect for most sports and action photography though, eg motorsport.

:plusone: The Canon 70-300 IS USM is excellent value for money giving good sharp images with good colour and contrast.

If it was me i might save a bit longer and have a look at a second hand canon 100-400mm i.s. you can then get shots like this auto focus is better on this lens as it's l spec.

Everyone who has one seems to like the Canon 70-300 (well a very loose survey :)).

If it's birds then you may want to wait and try and save (and maybe seel the 28-135 dependant on current use - I do like that lense) to get to 400mm which could be:

300 f4 IS (one on here for £700 http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=183624) and you could then also get a TC 1.4 which should still AF.

or a 100-400mm (just bought one off here for £800)

or a 400m f5.6 which seems to be a favourite of those doing bird photography.

and \ or.... invest in a hide for the garden \ to take out with you, practise on ducks \ gulls etc in parks, by the sea. I went to Camber Sands and found you could get some great shots of the gulls going above the dunes there.

Good luck!

Thanks for the response so far, very helpful.
I'm not big on the wildlife bit (yet) so the really long range would be wasted on me, but I do like architecture. Went to London last year and found quite a few times I was lacking a bit of zoom, it was doing my head in.
Deffo don't want to sell my 28-135 as its a great all rounder.
Had a look at the Canon 70-300 IS USM in Jessops yesterday, its seemed well built, it was £399 which for Jessops is a fairly good price (i think).

You could always shop around for a Sigma 170-500 (often found on TP).

I found an as new one here six months ago for £320 and have'nt taken it of my body since. Its sharp and robust....albeit a bit heavy.

If you can get a 2nd hand Sigma 120-400 OS, it is an excellent lens

Thanks again for the advice peeps.
I'm plumping for the Canon 70-300 IS USM, owt over 300mm is a serious lump of equipment to lug about and to be honest I wouldn't be using one to its full potential.
