how much are you willing to spend ? i bought a Velbon CX440 from Jessops for about £35 as my starter tripod. i think you get what you pay for really if i'm honest, so you might as well pay a little more for a bit more quality.

Before making a decision i would like to suggest you have a read of some of the forum posts relating to tripods.

I appreciate that this one is very competitively priced but camera equipment is very expensive and it is important that you have confidence in the strength and quality of the tripod you use.

Have a look at the Redsnapper range; they are excellent quality and value. Joe, the owner, has some special prices at present, which are being held for a few weeks yet, and gives TP members a 10% discount when this offer is not in place.

If it was me I would pay as much as you can afford to with a tripod, as if you get a quality version they should last a lifetime. Also bear in mind the weight of it as if its too heavy you will leave it in the car boot and make do.

I was looking soemthing that folds away pretty small and is pretty light so I can carry it about.

with tripods you can choose two of the following criteria.

-cheap

-sturdy

-lightweight

You can get cheap sturdy ones, but they're very heavy
You can get sturdy lightweight ones, but they're expensive
You can get cheap light ones, but they're not very sturdy.

Look at the Redsnapper or Velbon ranges.

Monopod only helps steady the camera but a tripod allows you to use long exposures (1/2 second - hours).

look around for sim specs to the red snapper monopod and you will be paying £80/100 easy its well worth the money and £15 delivery, and you will have a quality piece of kit that will carry 6kg of gear easy and your still saving money.:D

the camlink tppro24a is on sale at jessops for £49 from £70, its a brilliant tripod for all uses, ive used mine for portraits to landscapes.

My first tripod was a cheapy from Aldi, but as I upgraded my gear it became heavier and my tripod was not stable enough.
I have just ordered a Redsnapper to go with my Redsnapper monopod as I now need more stability for the weight of camera and lens and for long and multiple exposures.

What's the difference between those 2, they're thee same price.

One has four section legs and the other has 3 section legs. The one with 4 sections folds slightly smaller but I would imagine that the 3 section will be slightly more stable.

Personally I think i'm going to buy myself the 284 with the ballhead in the next day or so. Looks like a fantastic bit of kit for the money.

Incidentally, I own something along the lines of the first tripod you were looking at on amazon. It folds up small enough but isn't stable when unfolded in anything approaching a gentle breeze which sort of defeats the purpose of owning a tripod in the first place. It's the main reason i'm planning on upgrading myself. :)

I believe that's the same as the first tripod in your previous post but without the head.

Your going to want a decent head to mount the camera and the 3 way head you were originally looking at looks excellent although I'm inclined towards the ball head myself.

3-way, ball, head, mount - there's a lot of innuendo with tripod's isn't there :D

I'm a noobie at all this like you and today at jessops brought a tripod called camlink tp-2100 for £20 reduced. I know that its cheap and there is different options about the price and quality but its a starter for me any ways and will upgrade as soon as i get better in new hobby

I ordered the Redsnapper 284 with the ball head today. I'm looking forward to it arriving although judging by all of the comments i've read i'm not likely to be disappointed.

I've read that tripod page before and I could well imagine myself spending more than I need on tripods. I thought it best to buy something decent his time.
