Calibrating LCD monitor

I'm trying out a 17" lcd but having some difficulty calibrating it. Adobe gamma and quickgamma don't seem to be able to get it quite right for me. Any tips? (and no I'm not going to go buy a spyder :) ) not even sure if one would work on an lcd screen.

Theres a couple of useful links in there.

The new versions of the colour spider do work with LCD/TFT monitors, and if you plan on doing a lot of printing it is advisable to use one.
