View Full Version : CGeezer's 52 2010 - Week Four "Cheat"
OMG it's 2010 already.
I'm setting out in the hope that I can do this 52 challenge in full and doesn't time just fly by :) I'm also going to try my level best to comment on everyone's 52 during the year ahead. I was looking for the list of 52'ers that I believe was going to be stickied so that I could have a nosey through other 52'ers threads but I can't find it for looking. I'm also swapping camera and expecting my hard earned D300 to arrive on Wednesday or Thursday of next week and will be waving goodbye to my trusty D200 soon so I must be allowed a little leeway for my OOF and badly composed images  The whole point of this 52 is to hopefully improve my togniques so I'm looking forward to being tested and will try to stumble on through.
I still have no idea what the themes are as yet and will probably have to nudge Simon for some links to start with. I wish everyone else doing the 52 week challenge the best of luck and hope you get out of it as much as you would like to over the year.
Let the games commence.

That should be the thread you need for the basics (hope that's the one you meant) - I don't know if the first challenge has gone up yet!
Good luck - will your daughter be doing the 52 as well?
No I don't think I want to torture her at such a young age and besides she may be better than me  Thanks for the link

So was I  anyways you have another watcher ;)
good luck with "commenting on everyone"
it looks like a bumper crop this year
don't forget to allow time to take your own pictures as well!
I should be okay commenting on everyone's during the week but I would like a clickable link with everyones 52 to make it nice and easy for me. That could be a bigger challenge than the photos
Good luck m8, will be watching
Thanks will try to do the same

Knowing how hard you faught to get your D300, I'm looking forward to seeing this!!
Good luck John!!
Still waiting for my camera. I'm determined to use it so my 52 is on hold for now. The PO should have delivered by 1pm today but I guess I have to give them a little leeway for the weather. Don't I?? :annoyed: :dummy:

Hi John
hope your d300 arrives soon, will follow this one fella with great interest.
First of all this is not the photo I had in mind to post this week. I was going to shoot the local 10 million quid bridge in Blackburn. But.. I was rushed into hospital on Wednesday and am confined to barracks for the next few days. I was in hospital and was playing about with my phone and noticed these rather groovy curved lines. I hope this is going to drag me through this week and will be trying to find a better subject once I get paroled :) By the way this is shot using my new D300 and It was the second or third shot so it will take me a little while to get used to it. I have a year to perfect it though  Hope you like it.

Thanks for looking in. I hope that you enjoy my attempts on this steep learning curve :)
John, I hope you get better soon, that's gotta be a bit grim, what with getting a new camera and all. Plenty of curves there, and is that a curve phone too ? The DOF works, and helps accentuate the curved lines. Well done considering  Looks well used too ;)
this one caught my eye on flickr.. hope you're up and about soon to play with your new toy.. take care :)
nice bit of dof fella, shame its not focused a tiny it more upward's on the curve of the button's.. good try with what you've got being held captive in hospital though

It's a Bold but it was the Curve that gave me the brainstorm of the idea. Thanks for commenting.

I wish I took a little more time now. I have a light-box jobbie and I'm sure I could have done a better job. I just wanted to get this one up and out the way to be honest. I will try harder as I go on, thanks for looking in mate :)

Thanks I'm going to try to wear this shutter out will see how I feel tomorrow and may re-shoot. that will mess up all your comments
DoF works well to accentuate what would otherwise have been something quite dull, I like the effect and it pulls the eye in
Well using Yv's rules I have decided to unashamedly change my entry as I managed to get out in the back yard without eagle eyes catching me

Hi John.
Hope you're on your way to getting better.
I liked your phone shot for the DOF, but I think I prefer the one that you replaced it with.
Very nice shot. Would have been nice with a full bottle, just for an extra bit of colour . . . would have given you a good excuse to go out and buy another bottle too ;)

Hello John
I've just been reading through your adventures with your new camera and sympathise with getting whisked off to hospital just as it arrives. I hope you're able to enjoy it now. I've had my pride and joy just over a year now and passed the 10,000 click mark this week! It just gets better and better - even if my photography doesn't! - I'm sure you'll feel the same. :D
Enjoy the 52 - that's a great start - I love the dof on the phone and there are curves on the JD bottle, and nature's fridge saves on the ice cubes.
I'll be following your thread with interest. :)
Jean
Nice shot of the JD bottle, not sure it really fits the theme though but then it's your 52 so you can do what you want.
Thanks for your comments all. I have been stalling all week hoping to put my plan into play but.. Today Saturday the roads finally cleared enough for me to make the forty mile round trip to take the shot of Jeffreys Hill only to find **** weather and un-usable photos. so as a compromise I'm going to use one I took last week and as promised one of my partners granddads poems who died five years ago as a tribute to him. Count yourselves lucky as I didn't use one of the REALLY broad Lancashire dialect poems he usually wrote in.
http://i46.tinypic.com/2gvog1s.jpg
The Lords Gift
So spake the Lord, to the very first Poet,
"I bestow upon Thee, the gift, of the Word."
That thou speak for the Fur-clad Beast.
And, for the Feathered Bird.
And, interpret the voice of the inanimate,
The Plant, the Water, the Earth.
That thy fellow men, of lesser ken.
May learn full well, their worth.
That thou hast nought, 'cept beauty of thought.
Bask not alone, in thy wealth.
But ever seek, however meek.
To tend thy neighbour's souls health.
And the beauty thou sees, in the Mountains, and Trees.
Thus, wilt thou seek, to convey.
That all may note, that beauty of thought.
To the benefit of their mortal stay.
If, with this gift, I endow thee.
thou immortalise Water, or Stone.
Or name of unknown neighbour.
So too, shalt thou immortalise thine own.
For Sculpt, shall eventually crumble, to powder.
The thickest paint, wither and dry.
Yet, a single pure thought, by the Poet's verse, taught.
May, for it's beauty, ne'er fade, or die.
What a beautiful poem.
Thank you ladysue your comments are very much appreciated :)
Great photo of a lovely place. I;d say it was a pretty hard area to photograph but you pulled it off. My partners horse will be giving birth as the farm just leading off that bridge in April :) Her parents live in Cow Ark.
Unfortunately we live in Gt Harwood. First buy and all that, can't afford the Ribble Valley we grew up in (my rents live in Whalley).
Love the JD shot too :)

That's a lovely poem expressing a beautiful idea. :) He sounds like a very talented poet.
The composition of the photo works well - and I love how the detailing of the stonework on the side of the bridge is emphasied by its covering of snow. The reflections in the river add interest, so lots of look at.

My daughter rides at Longsight stables she loves anything horsey. I was fairly pleased as to how this one turned out and I amazingly didn't manage to blow the snow for once  Look forward to seeing your work at some point and thanks for commenting. I really love the first house over the bridge as it backs on to the Ribble and I used to go fishing a lot so ahhhh we can all dream :)

What an exciting start to your 52 John. First the new camera then the trip to hospital followed by house arrest :D
I hope the rest of the year doesn¡t continue at that level of intensity.
Having said that you've already produced a couple of corkers. Not so keen on the phone one but love the JD Bottle (suppose it's because I love  JD) In fact there are quite a few of us on here who do, and there was a JDathon at the Convention last year (but I missed it because I'd already gone to bed :()
As for the poem, what a talented man he was
And you have certainly done justice to his work with that picture. So   to you too.
Thanks for your kind words Bruja. I'm sort of winging it at the moment and have a great plan for the "chopped" challenge. Not sure if it will work out okay though will have to get some gear in for this one I think.... I must not look at others untill I post (repeat 99 times)
Well what a disaster this was I had to leave it till today to do my 52 and I had problems with my model (Jadey) :) I was no way going to make this an easy chopping board challenge so looked at two other alternatives. My first idea was a piece of carrot shaped into a knife with a couple of wood slices from a cross cut saw, you guessed it I didn't manage to get the offcuts of wood. So on to plan B and you will see a pattern emerging My kids have been at Ju Jitsu for a couple of months now and finally got their suits, I planned to break some wood ninja stylee myself but it looked very tough so I had to forgo the wood and settle for a good old Ju Jitsu chop. Using my sb600 very badly and only being to drag Jadey's eyes away from American Idol for a few seconds I got this little gem. Hope I can drag through for this week on this one.

That's a nice take on the theme. As Ste said, it appears a little soft on my monitor, and whilst highlights are close to blowing out on the left shoulder, the eyes appears quite dark by comparison.
Still a cute photo though.

No I honestly wanted it to be pin sharp matey, I am so not happy with this shot but it's this or run into the kitchen and chop some veg

Yes agreed. I really wanted to get this up and sort of blagged it, should have spent more time tbh but I guess this will be my re-shot if I can.

Agreed, Thanks for the cute quote, at least I get a point for having a cute daughter
That's a lovely take on the theme! Yes, it is soft (shutter speed is slow) and the lighting could be better, but worth reshooting sometime when your model is a bit more co-operative. She is very sweet!
Ply her with lots of chocolate and have another go, not necessarily for the 52, but because you have the makings of a lovely photo there. That could be a real keeper IMO, just need to get the issues already mentioned sorted.
Great idea btw :D

Thank you both for your kind words I intend re-shooting and I may ask the kids Ju Jitsu teacher if I can take a few at the dojo as it is a much bigger space and should have more lighting options too.
turn the telly off next time ;) can never get a shot of my grandson when the tv is on
the softness already mentioned but its a great image all the same.. jadey is very sweet in her outfit :)

Thanks Michelle I'm sure it was more my errors than hers to be honest. I took one of Joe in his spiderman mask today and I think I nailed it so it may have just been rushing to complete the task.
I like your take on the theme, but like Sue said the eyes look a little dark.
Thanks for commenting I will try to work out this flash thingy as I have not the first clue. It looks very impressive stuck on the top of the camera but knowing the workings would help. In the end I took off the sb-600 and used the on-board flash instead.

Sorry Scott didn't notice you had commented :) I am determined to have a re-shoot now but am out all day tomorrow so will have to try next week at some point.
You mentioned the SB600 but the exif suggests the flash didn't fire and you've got a 1/13th shutter speed which explains the blur.
It's a nice pose from a seemingly willing model and I like the background too. Just a shame about the low shutter speed.
A lovely poem and shot to match John.
the Chopped image is a very nice image of here, but it's got some motion blur from the very slow shutter speed, although I do like the colours and warmth
OK only week four and having to cheat my way through the 52 already.
I moved house this week and my front room looks like a Red Cross distribution warehouse. Also employing cheap family labour made sure that the damage caused to my handrail on the stairs (sliding furniture down it instead of lifting) came back to bite me in that I got a two inch splinter embedded in my hand. I pulled it out with my teeth Rambo stylee (much better than a hospital visit) but my hand is still in a little pain two days on. Well there are the excuses and here is one I took earlier in good old Blue Peter fashion.
Hope you like it and normal service will resume as soon as possible.

Hi John, Catch up time for me!
Week 3 Chopped: I agree with all the technical comments, and have to add that Jadey looks cute in her jujitsu suit - and every bit a budding martial arts expert (to add to her photography skills :))
Week 4 Street: Ouch - moving house sounds as though it was painful in more ways than one. I hope your hand's better now. :) I love the photo (irrespective of it's Blue Peter status). You've caught a great expression on his face - he looks as though he's just hit a high note :) If I'm being very picky, it's very contrasty (usually what I love in b&w) but I just wonder, given the subject matter and the fact that he's dressed for cold weather, if a bit less contrst would work too? Just a thought - definitely not a criticism.

John, I’m so sorry. I seem to be hugely behind with your 52 thread – somehow I’ve managed to miss this one 3 weeks in a row.
Poetry : That’s an absolutely beautiful poem. Glad that you didn’t go for the really broad dialect one, because this one actually makes sense
And it’s a lovely shot to go with it. I like the curve of the road and the bridge and the snow really makes it. It’s got a real Christmas card feel to it.
Chopped : Lovely shot in its own right. I agree with the comments about the softness and the darkness around the eyes, but it’s a keeper just for the awwwwww factor.
It’d be great to see a reshoot with the lighting issues resolved, I feel like there’s a stunning image in there just waiting to be let out.
Street : Cheat! ;)
Although I think I can let you off with the house move – and well done for having something to submit.
Difficult for me to comment on this one, because street photography is really not my thing. But I can see that the B&W works well, good expression captured on his face and some nice motion blur on his hand.

Are yo ucoming along?

Hi Sarah
Poem
Glad you liked the poem I am in the process of putting them all into a book for a present for his family. I saw a post today on TP of a site called Blurb and can get one completed in time for Christmas I hope.

I know the jury is out on the hand blur but my technique is pretty bad at the moment and I'm still making schoolboy errors. I really need to spend more time reading up on camera settings to achieve better results. Hopefully there will be a marked improvement in my photography by the last week of 2010 :)
And no problem about the late comment, I did say myself I would comment on all 52'ers posts and haven't done any for a couple of weeks. I will catch up I hope next week :)
