Happy new year everyone! After a lot of thought I have decided to do another 52. Hopefully a bit more creative than the last one, covering some different subjects and getting me out of my comfort zone. A very quick thanks to everyone kind enough to leave comments on my 2009 efforts and hopefully will get plenty of feedback on my 2010 efforts. Links to both parts of the 2009 blog can be seen below -

2010 - Week 1 - 2010, a new year and a picture of Me!

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG1.jpg

Happy new year everyone! I am going to start my 2010 blog with the first picture of me I have posted on here. I had to get some passport style shots done as apparently its been 10 years since I passed my driving test and my license needs to be renewed with an up to date picture of me on it. So along I went to one of those photo booths and had them done, but, only after listening to the instructions to not smile/frown/have anything on my head/look straight forward/adjust my seat/blah blah blah i ended up with 4 pictures of what looks like a lifeless/bored me! Hahaha. Anyway to make them slightly more interesting I have tried to make them look a bit old school with a sepia tone and concentrated on two of the 4 shots, one sharp and clear the other fading out. Im sure these effects would be frowned on by the DVLA but I dont care.

I think it's a great starting these series' with self portraits, and this is another different way of doing it. Love the DOF. Makes your eyes really stand out.

Good luck with it.

Week 2 - Wandering the Grantham Canal 2

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG2.1 lightened%20to%20brighten%20snow.jpg

Back to one of my local spots for this weeks photo. Taking on the feedback from the "Wandering the Grantham Canal" photo I posted up here a few weeks back regarding way to much foreground and so on. So this time the image has changed slightly. First of all their has been a couple of inches of snowfall whereas last time is was just a little frosty. Second main change is I have made a square crop of the image. For me, I think this works a little better than the original. A little less foreground was, after consideration a good idea (why dont I think of these things first!), it wasnt adding anything to the picture having that unused space at the bottom. I think the snow has cetainly added another dimension here, its given it a real wintery cold feel. Lastly I have added a vignette to the image to really focus the eyes into the middle and down through the image along the pathway. Hopefully you will agree these changes have made an improvement from the original. As always I look forward to reading through your thoughts!

I really like it, the contrast between the path and the bushes helps my eye lead around the photo which leads to the large tree in the background :)
Personally I'd increase the contrast slightly as it looks a bit flat, but apart from that its well done :D

Welcome back to the 52 trail Ant. A great pair of starting shots. The SP has worked well, is that a shot of a passport strip ? The Grantham Canal is getting some good press in your 52's.

Thanks for dropping by. It is indeed a photo of a passport strip.
Indeed, the Grantham Canal is local to me within walking distance and I usually have the camera with me so have various shots of different locations!!

Glad you like them.

Week 3 - The Sky Mirror, Nottingham Playhouse

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG3.jpg

Taken on Tuesday evening whilst out in the city centre with my photography club. Its a lovely piece of contemporary art called "The Sky Mirror". The reason its called the sky mirror is becuase its angled towards the sky and reflects whats going on in its super polished stainless steel surface. It was designed by the internationally acclaimed and Turner prize winner Anish Kapoor. The Sky Mirror was unveiled on 27 April 2001 as part of the refurbishment of The Playhouse theatre. According to the theatres website this piece of art attracts over 100,000 visitors a year. So for your perusal here is my take on it. Thanks for visiting!

Week 4 - Eggcellent

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG4.jpg

Last weekend I was tasked with shooting something that I havent really done before, well not purposely anyway. I had to get some still life photos taken for a club competition on the following Tuesday. So I set about using my trusty aid google just to double check the exact definition and away I went. This weeks shot is one of the results I came up with. I was pretty happy with the shot once taken and processed and for me I thought it would make for a strong image in the comp. Along came Tuesday, looking forward to the evenings competition and banter with fellow club members. It was an eventful night, our judge was nearly an hour late, some confusion with the booking but he moved heaven and earth to get with us as soon as he could which was good of him. To cut a long story short this weeks blog image ended up being the winning photograph of our clubs still life competition! I have to say that I'm chuffed with the result. My 3 other images got 15, 17 and 17 which was also pleasing (all marks out of 20) All in all a good night I'm sure you will agree.

That mirror looks amazing Ant... I like the way you've shot it and got that tower in the reflection. I'm not sure you could have shot it from many other angles, and not been in it...

Well done on the comp and the still life images. Really like the Egg and the blue stripe reflected in that eggcup helps to set it off.

I like the teacups, but they don't have the same impact as the egg.

Sorry for missing the thread for a couple of weeks.

Week 6 - I-Phone

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG6.jpg

WANT ONE!!!!!... Love the angle, and I can see you've been using it quite a bit, based on the battery :D... It looks like there's some odd lighting going on across the face though Ant. There's a shadow from the lower left running through the home button, and I think you've lost some of the contrast from the screen because of it. Not that I have much clue of lighting something like this though ;)

Week 7 - 2010 Nottingham Light Night - 1

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG7.jpg

This week saw the start of Nottingham Light Night 2010. Its the third year in a row this event has taken place and it seems to get bigger and better every year. Professional lighting and pyrotechnics artists showed off their skill by lighting up various parts of the city centre along with some impressive firework displays from places such as the castle roof. The so called "Nottingham eye" was also shipped in for the event allowing some great views across the city. All in all a good night, great atmosphere and generally nice place to be.

I like that. lovely colours and the motion in the wheel and people is excellent. It's probably just me, but it looks like it's leaning over backwards...

It also looks like a small lake on your right, and I would love to see what the wheel and reflection look like if you got one ;)...

I also can't believe no one else has seen this thread...

Shucks thanks matey! The "leaning over backwards" is the effect of my 17-40 lens on my full frame camera. Its is indeed in the right a water feature. I had a shot sort of similar on my blog from 2009 which shows the reflection, have a look see what ya think, the link is in my signiture.

With regard to others not seeing the thread i am not sure, didnt get too many comments on last years blog either compared to most :bang:

Week 8 - 2010 Nottingham Light Night - 2

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG8.jpg

A second image from my 2010 Nottingham Light Night set. I think one has different qualities to the first one, you can see much more of the reflections of the wheel in the water feature. Also I like the fact you can see the buildings on both sides of the square leading down to the focal points of the wheel and Council House.

Week 9 - 2010 Nottingham Light Night - 3

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG9.jpg

My third and final image from Light Night 2010. This time a view of the castle with the specially installed gas lanterns which where constantly blowing large amounts of fire from them and making loud hissing noises. Also there was a laser display being projected onto the side of the castle which was quite nice too.

jgs001

That's very atmospheric Ant. Love the flaming lanterns and the mistiness. I'm not sure the laser has worked quite so well with a 30s exposure, I'd no idea what that was looking at the image (maybe it's worked well after all ;))...

I think perhaps the only point of the image that isnt 100% is the laser onto the wall, you can clearly see that something is being projected but not exactly what.

Good point, I just thought it showed that there was a laser show onto the side of the castle even though you cant make out what it is :bonk:

Week 10 - Mallory Park Buildbase Trophy

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG10.jpg

Sunday 7th March 2010, I have been looking forward to this date for a while knowing that it was the start of the club level motorsport season at Mallory Park. I have had a self enforced break from shooting motorsports for a good few months now to concentrate on other subjects but it was great to be back in the thick of the action today. Can't be the smell of good old two stroke and petrol fumes! Took me a while to get back into it, technique was a little rusty but by mid morning all was flowing well and I began to bag a lot of decent photos. This weeks shot was taken just after the hairpin as the rider was furiously accelerating, so much so that his front wheel lifted clean off the floor! To say I havent shot motorsport in anger for a while I am happy with this shot! Hopefully over the coming months as the motorsport season really gets going then there will be many more like this to come!

Hi jgs001, Thanks, it was a little tricky mainly due to my rustyness to be fair. Really pleased with it for such an early shot in the season and i can only hope that things will get better. It was just nice to be out at the track again!

Week 11 - Mallory Park Buildbase Trophy 2

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG11.jpg

Another from a series taken at the Mallory Park Buildbase Trophy 2010. As you can see for this weeks and last weeks image the lighting was quite tricky, especially on bikes and helmets that were white in colour as it was easy to blow the highlights. What you also find when you have harsh light is the amount of stong shadows which could be found under the wheel arches of the bikes for example. I think i have done a pretty good job at keeping detail in these shots. I am getting more and more impressed with my 100-400 lens at the moment, as long as i have the light this lens can pull out some stunning images.

jgs001

Hi Ant, I'm so sorry I've neglected your thread this year. Life's been manic and I was withut my computer for nearly 3 weeks. I'm still trying to catch up. :)

I absolutely love your Nottingham Light Night shots. If I had to pick a favourite it would be #2, by a whisker, because I love the variation in light from the wheel and the Council House in the background, and the people at the foot of the wheel lend scale.

I love the nice clean graphic quality of the still lifes (lives?) too.

The bike shots - mm, know nothing about such things, but the Bournemouth Kawasaki shot appeals purely because of the Kawasaki green against the green crash barriers. :)

I'll try and keep up from now on. :D

Week 12 - Big City, bright lights

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG12.jpg

Back to one of my Light Night images for this week. Havent had any time for photography the past couple of weeks so I decided to go back and re process one or two of these images. I have added a sepia tone to this one, which I think has given this modern shot on old look. For me it works well, I like the construction of the image, how the shapes fit together in the frame to create a visually pleasing photograph. I look forward to hearing what you all think to this photograph.

Week 13 - DK Racing sidecar

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG13.jpg

This weeks image comes from a recent trip to the Mallory Park Buildbase Trophy event. This time its from the sidecar race. In some ways you may think this image looks a little static but thats due to the shutter speed used to freeze the action. Clearly if the sidecar was really static the "crazy" passenger that leans in and out of the cart would not be lent half over towards the driver. I think this has come out well, I like the strong red colour of the sidecar and I also like the fact you can see an expression on the passengers face. I look forward to reading all your comments so please take a few seconds to let me know what you think! Thanks and have a great week!

Week 14 - Nottingham Science Park

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG14.jpg

Happy easter everyone! Today is easter Sunday and some glorious weather today! Makes a nice change after all the horrid rain we have had in Nottingham recently. So out with the camera I went and the order of the day was to shoot some funky buildings. Where better to start but the Nottingham Science Park. These buildings are covered in some really nice standout colours, greens, yellows and oranges. I really like them, they look cool, fresh and modern. While I was out we had a shower of rain and just before this we had a real build up of moody grey cloud overhead. I happened to be just in the right position to caputure this over the building I was shooting. Its come out pretty moody and the buildings really stand out against the sky. I have got some interesting foreground interest with the reeds which were barely as high as the decking the last time I visited. So as always I look forward to your comments and thoughts on this photo. Thanks and have a great week!

Happy Easter Ant... They really are vivid those buildings aren't they. And they are set off so well by that moody grey sky. I really like it. The only thing about it that's a little niggly for me, and I really don't know what could be done about it without losing some aspect of the rest of the image is the V of the decks... I'm not sure... perhaps if the line on the left hand joined the edge at the bottom or some such...

Week 15 - A Squidger and his seeds

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG15.jpg

Had a trip to Attenborough nature reserve this morning with the intention of shooting some birds. This proved to be much harder than I imagined. I came back with no useable images of birds at all but now firmly believe I have the answer! Either a 5000mm F2.8 of a rifle haha So as I was walking around I caught sight of this little guy so I opened fire on him and caught him eating his seeds or grain. Think its turned out ok, decided on the b&w conversion as I didnt think keeping the colour was adding anything.

It's a cracking shot of the squidger Ant... lovely details and textures in his fur that the mono has bought out well. As for birds... I have to agree, but carrying that thing is gonna be a total mare :D... I tried at 1200mm f/15 (it's a telescope so it's fixed) manual focus and it's damned hard.

Week 16 - Notts Sunday Football League, Premier One - Cotgrave FC vs Half Moon

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG16.jpg

After going along to a sports photography talk at our camera club Tuesday just gone I was inspired to go out and shoot some action shots myself. The sport of choice was football and the team in question would be my local team Cotgrave FC. This is the only the second time I have shot a football match, the first time being around two years ago so nothing recent. The lighting conditions were very good if a little bright at times which gave potential issues with blow out on whote shorts and of course the football. Other than that it was a case of anticipating where the ball would go and the action would take place. This weeks shot has been chosen becuase it combines action and a small dose of pain for the striker as the goalies fist and elbow lands into the back of his head! Not a lot I could do with the background as with a lot of local pitches houses back onto them. All in all it was a good few hours work I think, lovely weather and some good sporting action. Hopeing to shoot some more football in the coming weeks before the season ends.

Really like the Science park shot. Lovely colours and composition. HDR by any chance?

The squirrel is a nice shot. Well framed but I'd like to see the colour version as the B&W treatment isn't doing much for me.

And I can't really comment on footie shots as I have nothing to do with football at all! Very good action shot though from my point of view and the puffed up cheek expression is amusing.

Week 18 - Swan Lake

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG18.jpg

Well hello readers, hope your weekends are going well. Hopefully mine will be as when you read this I will be photographing some awesome scenery in Glencoe, Scotland. So this weekends photo comes to you from a localish canal (not so much of a lake but I liked the title) This was totally a "right place, right time" shot. I was actually photographing a swan on its nest with eggs when some geese came flying down the canal toward where it was. "Daddy swan" pictured here decided he wasnt having any of it and retaliated and safe to say the geese turned round sharpish and landed in a near by field. The swan then landed in the canal causing a nice big splash which I have managed to capture before then climbing up into the same field as the geese and proceeded to usher them away further from the nest for a good 5 minutes. So not only did I manage to capture what is my first swan in flight/landing in water shot which I rather like but I got to see a swan protecting his nest. So thats all from me for now and hopefully in the coming weeks there will be some rather nice landscapes for you to be perusing.

Hi Ant.

How have I managed to get through 16 weeks of this 52 without once stumbling into your thread ?????
There are some great shots there too.

Far too many for me to catch up on all of them, but I really like your wildlife stuff - the squirrel with its nuts and the swan that you posted this week are both beautiful.

Now I've found this I'll try by best to keep up to date.

The football ones are full of action and expression, but don't particularly float my boat - that's not a criticism of your photography, and I know shooting any sport is a 'mare. :)

However, the swan coming in for a well-timed splash down is fabulous! It even looks as though he's checking his reflection in the water - and what a reflection it is, too. You must be thrilled to bits with this one. I know I would be. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic.:clap::clap:

The football ones are full of action and expression, but don't particularly float my boat - that's not a criticism of your photography, and I know shooting any sport is a 'mare. :)

However, the swan coming in for a well-timed splash down is fabulous! It even looks as though he's checking his reflection in the water - and what a reflection it is, too. You must be thrilled to bits with this one. I know I would be. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic.:clap::clap:

Jean

:clap::clap: Stunning shot of that swan Ant, very well done, and spot on shot. I'm with Jean, fantastic and I'd be thrilled to have captured something like that.

Another +1 for the great Swan shot. Very difficult to time it right and catching the reflection has worked very well.

Good stuff!

Ian.

Wow, fantastic shot of the Swan.

Wow, loads of comments this week, by far the most this year for one weeks shot which is awesome! Thanks

Dont worry if you have missed my 52 so far, there are so many to keep up with one persons 52 can drop down a page or two very quickly!

Week 19 - Rannoch Moor, Glencoe

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG19.jpg

This week sees the first in a series of shots from my recent trip up north to Glencoe, Scotland. What a wonderful place it is to photograph, lots of stunning scenery if a little baron but that definately adds to the photographs. This trip also gave me my first chance to try out my new Lee filter system that I have had sat on my desk since the Focus on Imaging show earlier in the year. The new filters certainly came in very handy indeed and really helped to bring out the mood in the sky on a lot of the photographs I took. This was an early morning venture out onto the moor, infact it was taken at 05.55, a time of day I usually like to spend in the warmth of my comfy bed! However, it was well worth the early start! We didnt have the best of weather for our weekend away, it was mainly grey moody skys all the way, with lovely sunshine and clouds reserved for the trip there and back which of course was spent in the car!

What a beautiful landscape.

Out of curiosity, which filters did you use, and why did you go B&W? Not criticising your choice, but that looks like a lovely landscape, and I just wondered what teh colour version looked like.

Is it a pano crop, or multkiple images stitched together?

Very nice work.

Hi,

For this shot I was using a Lee 0.9 (3 stop) soft grad for the sky. I went for B&W becuase at the time of morning I took the image, pre 6am the light/colour temp was very cool (quite blue) I am becoming quite a fan of B&W and am always looking for a good landscape thats worthy of conversion. I shall upload the colour one very shortly. Hope that covers everything, if not just shout. Thanks for your comments too.

See above, will upload the unedited colour version shortly.

I knew I might have got the wrong name. Thanks for pointing it out. It is just on the opposite side of the road though so perhaps i can be forgiven? Parking wasnt so bad, due to the time we were out and about we parked in the works layby both days just before the bridge. Such a lovely place though I want to go back asap!

Below is the unedited colour version as it came out of the camera aside from the rectangular panoramic crop I gave it.

I decided that I prefered the B&W so didnt really persue a colour version too much.

Week 20 - The road to nowhere

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG20.jpg

Another from my Glencoe set. I am pleased with the way this one has come out. I have spent a little while processing it, using some methods I have only just started using. I am sometimes a bit lazy and take shortcuts in Lightroom, so what I have been doing is learning photoshop more and doing stuff in there......been good fun actually trying out different ways of doing things, as always there are 10 ways or more to skin a cat. This shot is taken on the main road that passes through Glencoe, literally one way in and out. As I was saying last week its quite baron around here, so I thought at the time of taking this it looks like a road to no where hence this weeks title. So processing on this was mainly around removing a few dust bunnies, burning in the sky, dodging the land either side of the road to bring out some more detail then a final burn on the road. So hopefully that explains everything. I look forward to hearing what you all think.

Third from my series of Glencoe shots. Not long now before we have a change of subject for those of you wanting to see something different. I like the b&w treatment, it works well and also helps to bring out the cloudy sky. Let me know what you think.

Sorry I missed last week Ant... the colour version... I'm in two minds... I think the colour works, but needs something doing to it, the B&W is very good and stands.

The road, I really like it, it works for me.

The third one works... but ... there's something, I can't put my finger on it... that's not quite doing it. Sorry that's no help at all is it ...

Another couple of stunning images since my last catchup. I'm beginning to think a themed 52 was a bit too much rather than just enjoying my photography like you clearly seem to be.

I particularly like the road shot and the effort you took on the PP shows. Really nice lines and composition. It's a strong image in my mind. Was it truly just a bit of dodge and burn?

I think the B&W version of the week before was a good choice. There's not much in the way of colour coming through and it works really well as it is.

Your final shot isn't as strong for me, but I'm really comparing it to the others. There's nothing wrong with it, I just prefer the others. Sorry that's not much help.

Ian.

Thanks for commenting! I agree with you about the colour one, I have found that no matter what I do to it, I can get a good picture but it just doesnt look as good as the B&W.

I like the third one becuase of its minimalism. But my problem is deciding which is my favourite, I just cant make my mind up half the time lol :bonk:

Well after last years 52 I did think about joining the themed 52, but in the end I decided to keep it open, then it can follow me and flow with whatever I am upto. Thanks for commenting and I am glad you like the road shot, I think its one of my better ones from recent shots perhaps........It was 95% dodge and burn with a little LR clarity and vibrance added in too.

Week 24 - Orchid

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG24.jpg

Something a little different this week. I went out with only my macro lens the other night as I very rarely use it so decided to give it a blast. Now normally when shooting macro I would have had the head of the orchid absolutely full frame, as this is what I understood macro shooting to be, huge full frame images full of detail super close up! Well a good friend I was out shooting with, we shall call him Mr Brown, pointed out that macro shots dont always have to be like this and infact you can take a macro shot and show the surroundings of the subject as well! So this weeks photo is just that, a shot of an orchid in its natural surroundings. A natural history picture if you will (my first one I think)

Love the falls shot Ant... mono really suits the moon

There's some great lines through the trainyard image, I think it works well... grubby train though :D

I like the orchid in it's surroundings, a nice image. I understood that macro means that the image on the sensor is the same size as the object, so in close and detailed. But, I've read that macro lenses, being really sharp, do a great job on other subjects too, and I think this shows that nicely.

Hi John,

Glad you agree with the mono treatment from the falls shot, I think it suits it better than colour.

I also like the grubbiness of the train to as I think it adds to the mood. A super clean train I dont think would have had the same effect.

Agree with you on macro lenses having other uses too, mine makes a nice portrait lens i think.

Week 32 - Chinese Arch, Liverpool

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG32.jpg

I decided to take a trip upto Liverpool yesterday. I have been meaning to get up there ever since I heard about the capital of Culture year in 2008. Having seen many nice photographs of the city it was now my turn to create something! There really is a lot to take in and a lot to photograph. So many great pieces of architecture plus I had the added bonus of the Liverpool Pride Festival being on as well which I wasnt aware of so I managed a few photos of that whilst there too! So the next few weeks here on my blog will have a flavour of Liverpool about them. I look forward to reading your thoughts and comments.

Hi Ant, I'm sorry I haven't dropped in on your thread for ages - I've been having trouble keeping my own threads up to date - and failing! - but I'm slowly getting back on track.

I've enjoyed a lovely trip round the UK this morning - thanks to your images. I like the Glencoe set - I've only visited there once and remember it as very dark and sombre. Your b&w shots create the atmosphere very well. :)

The Chinese Arch in Liverpool caught my eye, too. I worked in Liverpool many years agao and don't remember ever seeing this. It makes a nice change from the Liver buildings and the Funnel, although I agree with John that the edges blend into the buildings a little. What was it like in colour? :)

The Red Arrows are always spectacular and you've caught some good theatrical shots - excellent.

My favourite is the Beaumaris sunrise - for its beautiful simplicity and lovely colours.

Week 35 - Eye on the ball

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG35.jpg

The football season has started again now and this was my local sides second game of the season. It was actually a night match although this shot was taken quite early on before it began to get dark. This was the first night match I had shot under floodlights and I can tell you it was certainly a challenge even using fast glass like my 70-200 2.8 IS. This shot was taken at iso800 but I took some later on at 1600 and that still wasnt really giving me a fast enough shutter speed even with my lens wide open. I have now found one of the limitations of my current setup, which is the iso performance, dont get me wrong I am not complaing, I did get some acceptable shots at around iso1000 but anything over this wasnt looking too great. So this weeks shot, it shows two players fighting to win the ball in the midfield position which was, to be fair, where most of this game was played. Another nights good practice for me in chalenging conditions which I did enjoy. Hopefully some more football shots to come now the season is back on and I look to get more practice. Settings for this shot were - F2.8//1/1000sec//ISO800//115mm taken with a Canon 40d and 70-200 2.8L IS

Week 37 - Flash course model

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG37.jpg

Had a rather eventful week this week which ended with me going on a course to learn all about my Canon Speedlight flashgun. I have to say the course was great, it was delivered by a Boston (USA) photographer called Rick Friedman (http://www.rickfriedman.com/) He was hired by Canon themselves for this course. What Rick doesnt know about flashwork and how to get stunning results from a speedlight flash isnt worth knowing! This weeks shot was one of a few test shots I took throughout the day. The portrait was taken outside in what can be described as very bright conditions. Althought I have cropped this to remove most of the sky (the original shot had lots of blue sky and clouds) the aim of the shot was to properly expose the sky as well as the model to get detail in both areas. I can assure you the aim was achieved I just feel this particular crop is stonger than the original image containing the sky. As far as editing goes its fairly minimal to be honest, the model has been treated to a very light course of skin smoothing, a vignette and that is it other than the crop as I mentioned before. I look forward to hearing what you all think about my first outside portrait taken with my speedlight flash.

Week 38 - Motion

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG38.jpg

Motion. An interesting subject that can be covered in many ways. It was one of the themes for our photographic society's annual "Photo Treasurehunt" A quick bit of thinking and I managed to capture this on the way back to the pub whilst being chauffered by the Stig! (Aka Terry) I like this shot, it has nice colours, you can clearly see motion through the windscreen and also you can see the speedo clearly in the frame too which adds to the sense of motion and proves we were actually moving!

Been meaning to try something like this myself, although I don't forsee the possibiltiy anytime soon. I'm guessing you were focussed on the dash display, but... it seems a bit soft... not sure if that's because of the movement of the car, or brightness of the display on the longer exposure.

I really like the colours and bounce in the lights though... nice. As for the Stig... were you in a 10 mph zone ;)...

I really like the colours and bounce in the lights though... nice. As for the Stig... were you in a 10 mph zone ;)...

Haha thanks John!

To be honest it was the flatest of roads and i tried my best to hold the tripod as still as I could in the car. In an ideal situation with a bit more time i would have liked to strap down the tripod so it was solid and shoot it again. I will try this shortly.

You are correct, the stig was very well behaved and adhered to the law of the road :)

Week 39 - The Royal Liver Building

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG39.jpg

Taken on a trip to Liverpool this year. Slightly different perspective to the usual shot as myself and 2 other photographers managed to talk our way onto someones roof terrace. I think the shot gives a good overall impression of the the impressive Liver buidling and the people in the shot give a sense of scale.

I'll look forward to the image with the locked down tripod

That's an impressive building. Nice bit of blagwork to get onto the terrace, and that's worked nicely... good sense of scale with the people too.

Week 40 - The former offices of the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board (1903-07) framed by the brand new Museum of Liverpool

Pretty much as per the title this week, its a bit of the "old and new" about this week photo.

Week 41 - Red sky at night

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG41.jpg

I shot this just over an hour ago (18.46 10/10/2010). Just literally less than a 5 minute drive from my house. I have been meaning to visit a couple of local spots that I have seen while driving about. It normally happens that when I drive past said places there is an excellent sunset happening and I dont have my trusty camera to capture the moment! Well today I did! I am quite happy with the outcome, I intended to silhouette the tree against the sky and that is what I have done.

You've done just what you set out to do, and it's a lovely result Ant... Amazing colours, and the gentle gradient across the sky works perfectly.

Really glad you like it John! Its the first time I have attempted this and it worked exactly as I imagined!

Thinking of printing and framing this for the office wall :)

Week 42 - Drop Art

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG42.jpg

Had a very enjoyable week off this week :) Had a trip out to Clumber park on Monday which is where this photo was taken from. Been meaning to try this for a while and just never got round to it. I reckon it would work very well also when the bluebells come back next year. Quite a simple technique really, set a slowish shutter speed and then just move the camera down a little while the shutter is open which causes the movement blur.

Interesting, how much movement was there Ant ? I rather like the abstractness... As for last weeks.. go for it... get it printed and put up somewhere.

Hi John,

Just a small amount of movement downwards. I started off with the sky in the top of the picture, fired the shutter then moved down maybe about 1 foot or so before the shutter closed.

Hope that makes sense!

Week 43 - Waltzer!

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG43.jpg

Had a trip out to Ilkeston fair this weekend to take a few pictures. I think this one came out pretty well. The aim was to show colour, movement and excitement!

Week 44 - Speeding Mustang

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG44.jpg

This rather cool shot was taken at Mallory Park last weekend at the "Top Hat Race Day" I was there with a couple of good friends, all three of us struggling to keep warm and hold our cameras steady! Was a really lovely day weather wise, nice autumn sunshine and some really cool cars. The era all the cars were from was 1950's to 70's touring car series. Some of them really sounded immense though. This weeks Mustang was one of them, it had the sound of America about it (v8 engine burble) All in all a really good day.

Week 45 - Nottingham by Night - 1

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG45.jpg

Taken on a recent trip out around Nottingham. The idea of this shot for me was to capture the traffic trails around what I am sure we all know as BBC island. I wanted to try and get a perfect loop of light with the traffic coming down from London Road, round the island then back up London Road on the other side. The light would of course change from headlights to breaklights about halfway round. I think this has just about been achieved but there were far more cars coming in then there were going back up the other side.

Sorry Ant, missed your thread for a couple of weeks...

Not sure on the waltzer, it works and certainly shows Colour and Movement though.

I like the Mustang, some movement in the wheels

You've certainly achieved what you set out to in that last one. I like it... I'm still to try light trails but I like that style of them.

Week 46 - Abandoned Church

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG46.jpg

Well what a night I had on Friday evening shooting an abandoned church! It was amazing! We had a good play with painting light with torches and flashguns and learnt plenty! Was something I hadnt done before but had been meaning to try. This weeks shot is actually taken towards the end of the session, with just a tiny but of light painted onto the wall (cant remember if it was a torch or a flashgun we used) but I think this has come out rather well. I love the colour of the sky and the fact you can see all the stars as well! I would definately recomend doing this to anyone, its so much fun and you can get some really cool shots!!

Thanks John!

I am surprised the stars show so well given the exposure time i would have expected them to have gone into little trails.

Not sure why that didnt happen?

Week 47 - Abandoned Church - 2

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG47.jpg

This is the 2nd in the series from a recent abandoned church shoot I did. I like this one, it has an eerie feel to it. Almost as if a ghost or random person may walk through the doorway at any time!! It was taken from the inside of the church with a flash gun fired from the outside through the windows and doorway you can see.

Regarding your stars... you were probably borderline on trailing... the 24mm on full frame is a bit less than 18mm on crop, and in the right point of the sky, 18mm at 30s is about max without trailing. If you pixel peep the stars do they look ever so slightly trailed ? If so, you just about got away with it.

I really like the church windows, nicely lit, and the effect is pretty moody.

Week 48 - Smarties!!

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG48.jpg

Had a rather nice week off work and had to begin work on shooting some macro/close up shots for an upcoming competition at my camera club. For this weeks shot this was only my second go using extension tubes which proved interesting. The tubes I used didnt allow me to control the aperture of the shot, they opened my lens right upto F2.8 and also forced me to manual focus. Not a massive issue as such, just meant that I needed to be super accurate with my focus as F2.8 on a macro lens isnt going to give you very much depth of field at all!!! I set my smarties out in coloured rows and then decided I would add one red one right into the middle which would be the one I would focus on. I think its worked well, its a nice colourful image, the red smartie is as sharp as its going to get at 2.8 and I like the way the smarties run in diagonal coloured lines through the frame. Let me know what you all think!

Week 49 - Strawberry and cream

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG49.jpg

Something rather tasty for you all this week :) An enjoyable shoot as once finished I was able to eat my props which is always a bonus! This was setup in a studio environment, using studio lights and was a very good experience learning more about how to use them to achieve certain lighting effects. Its absolutely something I want to learn a lot more about and not just for this type of shot either. As always please let me have your thoughts on this weeks photo, good bad or indifferent and also if you have any suggestions of how it could be improved!

Week 50 - Surprise View, Derbyshire

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG50.jpg

This week I had a trip out to Derbyshire with a couple of friends from camera club. It was the recomendation of one of them to visit this place as it had spectacular views! Well they werent wrong on that part. It was very nice. Just we could have done to be about an hour earlier getting to the summit. That hour was however spent in a little tea shop keeping warm and drinking a nice cup of rosie lea! :) When we did make it out of the shop and to the destination we had enough time to bag maybe a couple of shots, one of which is this weeks blog photo. So my tip of the week is to spend less time drinking tea, or at least get there early enough to have time to drink tea and make it to your chosen position in plenty of time to prepare!! Was all good fun anyway and good company too! Definately worth a few more visits to this place and to the Peak District! Its an awesome place with potential for so much good photography!

Again you have managed to get some great images for your themes!
39, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 50 - great to awesome images!! :)

I went to a lecture by a photographer I forget his name now, he was a Doctor/Photographer who did lots of work in India - anyway he shown us some ok images, then he shown the same images but taken at the 'right time' of day, and it made the shot! It is SO important especially to getting those little seen images.

Well done, sorry not stopped by often lots going on :/

Week 51 - Kiwi Macro

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG51.jpg

Well what a week. Been rather busy with loads of things including christmas shopping! Not really had any time for photography at all. So for my second to last blog shot of the year I am pulling one from my macro comp shots that didnt actually make it into the final selection. This was again done using studio lighting but could easily be done with a speedlight flash gun. After much experimentation I decided it was best to use a fairly thick slice of kiwi as the thinner slices the colour faded out of them too easily for the effect and detail levels I wanted. The thicker the slice the less quickly the light got through. I think the shot has worked out well, its highly detailed, very punchy and just a shame it didnt make it into the comp as it might have got me a 3rd place to go with my 1st and 2nd! :)

Week 52 - Ladybower Reservoir Jetty

http://www.anthony-clay.co.uk/TPF/blog2010/IMG52.jpg

Merry christmas to you all! Yes I am a day late and it was yesterday but even so! Needed to get out of the house today for some fresh air and to get some photos so myself and good friend Gillain decided to head over to Derbyshire so see what we could get. Ladybower wasnt the intended destination but it certainly made for a few good photos I think (hopefully Gillian will confirm this) Once again, as with our last trip out to Derbyshire we didnt have too much time to bag the shots we wanted before the light dissapeared! Even so we had a good time, got some fresh air and excercised the cameras a little! So what better way to sign off 2010 blog than with a snowy black and white photo at christmas! Hope you have all enjoyed yourselves and I would like to wish you all a Happy and prosperous new year! Thanks again for all your support in 2010!
