Hello,
as the titles says, as i am not sure what its called, can they be used on differnent lenses or is there limits.
reason i ask is that i have a sony lesn that i wanted to take out in the snow today but the thing on the end is quite shallow and recalled the sony lens i had before had a larger thing which would have protected the lens from the snow, so i was wondering if i would be able to buy another one to offer more shield.
Any ideas?
thanks

You can get a rubber one for lenses that were not originally designed to have one.
Some have petal shaped hoods, and putting a round hood on one may cause a darkening of the edges which is called vignetting. Wide angle lenses often have petal hoods, telephotos often have deep round hoods.

where would i go about getting one and are they a standard fit?
if i have a 75-200m lens would that hood lens from that fit my 18-55 lens
sorry if that is lazy but camera isnt in the house at the moment
thanks

if the lens hood you already have for the 18-55 came with the lens then that is about as deep as you can go with a hood, with the lens being 18mm at its shortest if you buy a bigger hood as said above you will get vignetting (dark corners on EVERY image shot at 18mm) the hood you got with the lens is that size for a reason. and the reason is to prevent vignetting.
hope that helps a little.

yeah i did think that there was a reason for the lenght and that they shouldnt be swapped between, so my next question would be, a 18-55 lens would that normally have a hood? if so how long would that be?
thanks

not sure how long the lens hood would be for the 18-55 kit lens, but i would have thought that sony would have supplied one when you bought your camera/lens kit.

id say that the depth of the hood for a 18-55 kit lens would be about 1inch deep or maybe a little less. i got one of those folding rubber ones for my old 18-55 kit lens when i first started and the vignetting was so annoying at about 18-24mm but after that it seemed to go,
