Canon 10D or Nikon 70

I have been offer the two above cameras for around £200 and would like comments/advice which would be best for my first DSLR camera

Whichever you like the feel of would be the main concern, canon and nikon handle very differently and i personally prefer nikon

Do you have any friends with either system that you could share lenses with?

go to jessops and handle the 40d and d90 and see which feels better because thats about the closest they get.

The Canon will be faster, better for action etc. I had the 70s and its not a bad camera. Not lightning AF but it'll do. Also, the 70 will be pin sharp from the camera...my 30d is often quite soft before any skulduggery in CS3 imho. ;)

The 10D is a great camera (I use it as my backup) and it is built very well. The only downside to it really is that it takes a second or so to become ready to take a shot when you turn on the camera, so if you're planning on shooting sports then this is not the camera for you.

As already mentioned, handle both cameras if you're able to - you'll know which 'feels' right for you :)

As said earlier i think the d70 is alot faster than the 10d. Plus if your using a lens with a motor then its not always the camera that dictates the speed, the 70-300 i had before i sold it was just as slow on my d2hs as it was on my d60

Well for not much more you can have either 20D / 30D or D80 / D200. They are immensely much better and fresher cameras.

10D pretty old camera, and are we taking about the nikon D70 or D70s, as I would go for the D70s model rather than the D70. 70 had a few problems that were ironed out with the D70s version

Personally I would go for a 20D rather than a 10D, if your luck you should be able to pick up a body and kit lens for around £250. The nikon 70Ds is also not bad, but your pushing the limits with only a budget of £200

check out MBP, Ffordes, Camtech, Mifsuds, Park Camera's.... all very good shops with used equipment, plus you'll get a rough idea of price as well

Maybe you will or maybe in practice you won't, depending on the dealer (my landlady found out about the tumble drier warranty the hard way only 4 months in). Most cameras sold by dealers are bought in disastrous condition for next to nothing and sold at these prices. I don't think that is fair to start with.
It is possible to source a mint example for a very good price from fleabay or here.

I mean't focusing speed mainly...also forgot to mention it is more solidly built than the D70/s. Oh yeah, obviousl the lenses does have a deciding factor in the speed of AF. Just my HO. If you can afford it, try and find a 30D/20D tahts my optinion. ;)

I'm sure that your tale of woe is true but there are reputable dealers and the dealer I referred to is a reputable dealer that I and many other amateur photographers have used. Their used kit is accurately described and they provide a warranty and if not they clearly state so.

Thanks for all your feedback, guys. I am going to up my budget to around £300 and see if I can get a later camera maybe a 20d/30d?

I bought my son a 10d, as a starter dlsr, he loved it but has replaced it with a 2nd hand 20d, he hammered the daylights out of the 10d, it never failed but he prefers the 20d, it is just so much better for the extra money.
If you can go to a 20/30 I'd certainly recommend it.
Personally I'd go for the 20 and buy something extra with the saving over the 30, another lens or flashgun if possible, even an old push pull zooms off e-bay will give you more photo ops, my 70/210 f4 cost me £70, newer ones cost a LOT more but it allows me to get shots I wouldnt have if I waited to save for a 'white' lens, the quality obviously isnt as high but I do at least get a shot. Old Canon ef (built for film cameras) lenses will work, with a 20 you will also have the option of ef-s (the 10 doesnt support them).

30D is an update of the 20D - basically a bigger screen - but then again for that money you can get a D80, which is a brilliant camera and has 10mp (it's basically a slimmed-down D200, which is awesome).

You really need to see which one feels right in your hand though, as this can make a massive difference. The 20D has it on megapixels but I still think the D70s is a better all-round package....

Well guys, I have bit the bullet and got myself a 30D as new boxed with 3 batteries etc and a Canon EF 100-300mm F4.5-5.6 USM lens for £300, what do you think? is the lense any good?
