View Full Version : A rainy day in with Photoshop
So today was boringly overcast and it rained. I decided to go through some old shots and see if I had learnt enough over the past few months to make them work. Apparently I have.
First up we have the Ferrari I saw the other week. I decided that it looked great in black and white, but as its a red Ferrari it needed to be in colour. So I did both.

Then we have some boats from Scotland. I am getting better with black and white photography now so I could do these pictures justice.

Then I decided to redo some Infrared shots, again. This is Ben Nevis with a custom white balance applied. I don't think I can make this shot any nicer now, after 4 goes :)

I found the following shot too, but annoyingly the clouds are blown out. It was either loose the clouds or loose the guy and the water. Since the guy really makes the shot, I lost the clouds.

An old favourite now. I've been tinkering with this shot in IR for months. I never thought to take a look at the colour version. The colours were a bit flat and boring so I combined it with the IR shot and got this really vibrant image.

Lastly, back to the 2 girls. I felt that the original was too grey and I didn't really like the timing of my shot. Luckily I took two shots. This one has a more "we're just chilling" kind of feel. Eyes closed and relaxing in the sunlight.

Thats all folks :) I do enjoy being able to go back to my old shots and apply new techniques to them. Gives me something to do on rainy days :)
I like the combined IR and colour shot Pete, really does look great.

Thanks :)
Can you share your technique on the IR shot?

It was simple really. I set the custom white balance to the most exposed part of the picture. Then I used the IR convert action (http://www.outdooreyes.com/photo95.php3) to fix the colours. That was it :)
look good Pete...sometimes rain is good!

Sure is :) Thanks.
i think image editing is one area of my photography that i really need to work on(aside from the obvious poor picture taking that is) a well edited image can make the difference between a so so shot and a great shot...

I think I've been lucky in that I had been using Photoshop for about 3 years before I got into digital photography. I also wrestled with the idea of not editing my shots at all, to become a better photographer. But after thinking for a while I did realise that with digital you really do need Photoshop.

Jaw hit floor, nuff said. Fantastic work.
There's some quality photos there, Pete. The Ben Nevis ones are great, and so the car. Others might disagree but I think the two B&W boat pics are a bit dark? The sky looks ok, but some of the detail in the boats is lost IMO, particularly in the reflections (which I think is the bet bit of a water pic).
Cheers

Thanks :) I think the boats are a bit dark. I wasn't 100% sure and I was hoping for someone to confirm it. I'll see if I can fix it :)
Real Biff question here - where does that PS Action paste into in the PS Folder?
