Good offer at Maplins next week

I was in Maplins this evening and whilst browsing the external hard drives when the spotty youth serving told me that they will have a 400gb for £70 next week.

Sounds like a seriously good deal, or will someone show me better. :D

I ordered 2 Iomega 400 Gb units last week at £56 ea inc after seeing a bargain site link. Unfortunately I got a phone call a few hours later to say they had run out of stock and as it was a clearance item there would be no more.

So I can't top that offer when it happens ;)

I did buy a 13A socket power meter thing at Maplins yesterday reduced to £15 (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=38343) and it has been quite entertaining seeing how much power things really use.

Also bought some remote control socket switch things here (http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=42504) that let you turn things on with a remote control. I use them for things like the wall fan and dust extractor in my workshop but it could be useful for someone with studio lights to switch on and off between shots?

That is pretty good actually, especially for Maplin.
The closest Ebuyer have is a Freecom 400GB for £87 (http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/114132). I'd be interested in seeing what these things are like, definitely. The other plus of a USB caddy is that it's just a standard HDD which you can upgrade in future if needs be.

LOL, I have one of those power displays :D

Came in very handy when I needed to prove to the the electricity board that my supply was low voltage and causing problems.
Quite often at peak times I could watch the display drop to 205V :eek:

That mybook sounds pretty good! I still have ~100gb of storage remaining, but it fills up faster nowadays than it used to!

I have a My Book Premium 250gb and I love it. They stack like books so think I may get another. I use it for photos and music really.
Just automatically schedules a backup and does it with no further intervention. Easy peasy.

Good price for a 500gb though... I think my 250gb was nearly that but it is the Firewire version and has the backup software too.

there is a firewire version as well from around £25 more. It was slightly cheaper from pricegrabber search at Dabs I think, but already have an Amazon account for tried and tested delivery without going through the registration palava with someone else.

I was loading up my latest batch from a ski break last week (mostly snapshots) but still shot in RAW. Partway through the load the hard drive filled up which is only 40Gb. Would never have run out had i not take up dslr photography recently. You don't really realise how quickly pic's eat up memory, so rather than go out on a diet, now I can go for a big binge!

I've discovered you have to watch Lightroom - it has a habit of creating lots of stacked tiffs and psd files as you do your editing and exporting!

Nice idea, but probably not all that practical in practice - most studio flashes have mighty big capacitors that store a hefty charge, so the flash will still trip even when off at the mains.
Could well be different with mid range-high end stuff though, I've only used fairly low end gear :)

Back to the HDD, it's a very nice offer. I'm dead set on getting a NAS or replacing one of my internal HDD's, though...

After a couple of bad experiences with Maplins this week (faulty goods, shoddy customer service) they ain't seeing any more of my money. :thumbsdown:

The kit is now up and running, all very smooth. The only time consuming thing was to completely revamp what I keep on my pc hard drive and what to commit to the external drive.

Decided on correspondence, itunes and jpeg files for the pc, the external drive for backing up pc files and to keep all RAW files. Only issue becomes that I will have no backup of my RAW files in case the external hard drive fails........unless I buy another spare. Gosh, this shopping lark is endless!
