I have 2 options here.
I can sell my 50d and tamron 17-50 to buy a 5dII (option 1)
OR
I can keep my 50d and tamron and buy a 5dI with a 28-70L (option 2)
option 2 gives me redundancy and good glass
option 1 gives me a shiny toy

What glass would you use on the 5DII?

will post glass
70-200f2.8L
50/1.4
sigma 15-30 (temporary/experimental)
possibly a 28-70L

I think you really want #1 TBH and you're just hoping people will say #1 and agree with you - after all, a shiny new toy is a shiny new toy
Seriously. if you want it, go for it!

If you had two bodies, how often would you use them? Would the 5dmkI take over from the 50D and that collect dust, in which case you will regret not going for option one.
Or will they get equal use and then it would be worth it?
What work do you do/enjoy?

Given that you have aspirations of going pro / semi pro then it has to be option 2, having spare kit wins every time.

I think 80+% of what I do the 5d is better for (portraits, events, music, landscape), but every now and again I take trips to the mach loop or shoot a rugby match for the paper.
Which leads me to think option 1
BUT I'm starting to get paid gigs in and the idea of having backup kit appeals to me a lot, so if I'm shooting something and the 5d dies I have the 50 in the bag to take over

get the 5DmkII and a cheap xxxD series body as back-up
You want the mkII, dont deny it, and i dont think you will seriously be happy with just a mkI
option one
new shiny kit
worthy of stock photos, high ISO quality. etc
then if you find that you need it, get a 40D for a backup later on for cropped, 6.3fps sports stuff etc

Or even an older 30D
Where did you get the 28-70L from?

friend of mine dropped it then insurance repaired it, but he bought a new one in the meantime. So kinda handy, also a good 200quid cheaper than the one in classifieds on here

You know that as soon as you buy a 5D Classic you'll start thinking of reasons why you need the 5dII don't you! That's the main reason stopping me from buying a 5D right now!

Ok, do you mean 24-70L or the older 28-70L, because i havent seen a 28-70L on here, and they are bloody hard to find as i want one

If you are looking at the Rugby / Mach Loop as occasional then the crop factor of the 50D coupled with the faster FPS and AF would be better for those anyway the option 1. So I think you know the sensible choice but I think you want the MKII
What do you really really need from a 5D Mk2 that a Mk1 doesn't provide ? is it really worth a 50D ?
