Am I right in thinking that using a Sigma 500 flash with my Canon 350D I can only get the following
In AV, TV and P the flash gives me fill in flash
and with M I can set the flash for proper full flash.
Or am I just not getting it?
Thanks
Allan

I would guess (as I don't know the Sigma f/gun) that if you set the gun to manual not matter what the setting is on the camera you will get full flash output! It is for every gun I've ever owned (that must be around 10+) :)
The principle of these modern guns is pretty much the same regardless of the make. I don't think you are altogether getting it Allan, but you're getting there I think. ;)
In AV,TV and P Modes, the amount of light the flash puts out depends entirely on the strength of the ambient light. In good daylight the gun used in these modes will usually use fill flash balanced with the ambient light as that's what usually achieves the most desirable result. If however you use any of these modes in low light, then the flash will increase it's output up to and including full power if necessary (if it's dark enough)
You are right in thinking that used in M Mode the flash puts out full power ( unless you dial in reduced power obviously)

If you put the flash into manual then it works at whatever power you set it for, In Ettl mode it works as a fill flash in AV and TV

Guys thank you. You've confirmed what I thought.
I have been using the flash it Ettl mode so get fill in flash in AV and Tv.
