Anyone had this problem before: camera turns on fine, meters fine but when you try to focus there's no audible or visible sign of focus lock - in fact, the lens doesn't even sound like it's trying to focus. Switch the lens to MF and it take and image fine. No error message on LCD and no other problems leading up to this fault. It's a body that was used on rare occasions by the previous owner. This is a company camera so costings for repairs aren't a problem

P.S. Anyone know of a good repair centre?

is this with one lens or more, also have you checked if it is set to use the back button for focus, may be worth checking.

What have you got it set to on the main dial?

Has anybody changed the settings in the camera menu. If they have set it back to default and try again.

Similar thing happened to my Brother in Laws 450D. Canon at Boreham Wood fixed it for £65 +VAT. I took it there myself. the camera was just over a year old at the time.
Never did know what the problem was though.

It's not set to AF using the button on the back is it? (I made that mistake when first using my 50D :D)

Nah, it's been working fine up to now with the regular shutter release.

Haven't checked the back button release - I'm a nIkon man so not totally au fait with this body.

It happens with any lens you try (all lenses work on other bodies though).

This is a real puzzle because it's one of our newer works cameras that's had only light use up to now. The guy who uses it on a daily basis said it was working one minute then not the next. It's had the custom functions reset by the guy who uses it so it's basically back to factory.

I'm not trying to Canon bash here, but we've had so many problems with 30D and 40D bodies recently; shutter releases wearing out on 40s, logic boards crashing on 30s, CF card pins bending on both models, now this. It's crap considering we have 10Ds and 20Ds that are still running perfectly - unfortunately, they're the bodies we want to break so they can be upgraded to something much newer!! :)

Think this may have to be sent to a repair shop which isn't Jessops; the guy who dealt with this kind of thing had tunnel vision and only ever used Jessops. thing was, we had two cameras sent away for service that too three months to come back - think we need speedier service than that....

Maybe it's a software problem. You could try updating the firmware and see if that gets it going again.

UPDATE: After a three days sat in my living room while i got round to having a good butchers at it, the Canon fairy must have been round - took it into work this morning and lo and behold, it works. Every time. God knows what was wrong but only time will tell if this prob rears it's head again... :)

Should you get any more problems try London camera Exchange, Leamington spa. Ask to speak to Tom (manager) or Adam.
