I don't know if anybody else would be up for it but, why not arrange some sort of meeting somewhere in the country and spend the day taking photos and exchanging views etc. Just a thought, one of the few I have!!!
In theory I am up for this but it all depends on where and when obviously...I’ll leave it up to you Gary to get all the names collected and organise everything :D
Well volunteered [smilie=t:
Nothing wrong with the idea, the difficult bit will be finding a suitable location where the majority can get to fairly easily. Probably rules me out :(

Thats the biggest hurdle of organising any meet, finding somewhere suitable for everybody ! Will always be a case of pleasing some of the people and not others !
We could all start by posting where we live, if we have transport and how far we are willing to travel..at least that way we can get an idea of what area might be suitable?
Me=Manchester, have a car, can collect/give a lift to 3 others and I am willing to travel upto a max of about 150 miles round trip.
Northampton, have a car, can give lifts to 3 as well, same sort of distances !
Well I'm in Warrington, Cheshire and willing to give upto 3 people a lift, with shared fuel costs of course.
What type of photography would people be interested in?
My preferance would be wildlife/landscapes but am willing to try anything.
mmm... I'm a little to far away hehehe, in México...
...but, I will be traveling to Europe! It supposed that I'll be the last week of July and the first week of August there, is the wedding of my best friend and as he is marring a French girl, so, the party will be near Paris, so I can plan my vacation, and spend some days in the UK! It will be great to spend some days there, I only know London.
let me know, when are you planning to do this meeting.
Cheers!
Aw sh** I would have loved to have met you all and have an outing! It would have been a great experience for me, being a newbie and all. Unfortunately I am too far away, as you all know. :( otherwise I would be there for sure. Hey, why don't you all come to Toronto, it's not that far away, lol :P

OK, so there is an interest in this then, if people would like to start making some suggestions as to where and what they would like to photograph, we have landscapes and wildlife so far,
Chester Zoo is very do-able for me, it's somewhere I haven't been for years and intend to go as soon as I get my long lens. It might be old hat for some of the locals I suppose?
I'm pretty local to Chester Zoo, and its one place I would never get tired of.
Best times to visit is when its starting to get colder. Most animals get theirs heads down when its hot.

Never been to Chester Zoo !
Is a little outside my original radius of 75miles, but i can make exceptions ! ;)
Also if any of the further south lads want to get a train up to Northampton i can pick a couple up !
Sounds liek there may be a plan forming ! lol

My mrs went to chester zoo a couple of weeks ago and said that it was great and I ought to go and get some pics there. Anymore for a trip to chester zoo?
I'd probably be prepared to do a round trip of about 400ish miles but being up beside Inverness restricts it to about the North of England I'd have thought.
Any more progress on this? there seems to be a reasonable interest in Chester Zoo and I know there is a couple more lads on the forum that are well within travelling distance. Any ideas for dates?
Chester Zoo sounds perfect. I've been meaning to get down there and now I have a new lens, should be fun :D

I am glad you picked up on my hint, you gonna drag terras along too?

I'm sure I can get one of the members of staff at Chester Zoo to tranq him up for us :D
Well we're definitely going to be hitting Chester Zoo in June when Jan is off work, hopefully mid week when it should be a little quieter, but we'd certainly be up for a meet there any time we can get. :)

Chester Zoo is fine for me
it's 20mins away from home and I get the odd frre ticket too ;)
I've been there twice since easter and STILL have'nt got all the images I was after.
One day I will see the specticled bears !
May's a no go for me as i'm out of the country for 1/2 of it
Any ideas on potential dates for this?
How many people are off or willing to take time off during the week so that we can catch the place when it is not to busy to get anywhere near the enclosures?
I work during the week, but as long as i have enough notice i dont mind booking a day off !
I have 2 days off during the week, so that could suit me.
I'm willing to take time off.
Hi guys, I just remembered about this. Chester Zoo sounds good. I want to go in the summer though so we get good light etc... But that contradicts what Matt said about the animals being asleep. :-/ Also, not sure about taking time off work as I am currently between jobs!

I don't think we have to go when its definitively summer as its been sunny recently. We could get lucky :) But definetly when its sunny :D I know I've been saying summer, but thats only because its generally sunny then.
I'd be up for this any time after the 27th June (end of exams \o/).
Rob
Looks like we are having an impromptu meet at Silverstone tomorrow ! :)

British Touring car championship is on this coming weekend at Oulton Park, 18-19 june.
It will be full of action, and good access to take piccies.
Is anyone interested in going to this event?
Then on the 10/11th September we have the British Superbikes.

Should be up for Superbikes though :)
Anybody still up for a meet at Chester Zoo ?
Spoken to Steve and suggestion would be after the schools are back so its a bit quieter ?
Sure. I'm free anytime really.
Definately up for that, let me contact the bank first for a loan for the ticket :D
We need one of the parent type people ;) here to inform us when the school holidays are over so that we can start to plan an actual date that suits the majority.
Anyone have the date that the little angles go back to abusing their teachers ;)
hi steve
i think your looking around the first week in september when all hell breaks loose again in the schools and on the roads lol
Usually around the 5th September is when they go back. I know that's when my daughter returns to school.
I think if it's while the schools are 'in session', and on a weekday, then a Wednesday would be best for me, but only if that suits everyone else of course. I'll fit in with everyone elses plans if need be.
In that case then and going of from work on Wed 7th, Thurs 8th or Fri 9th September.
For me to be able to take part in this trip it needs to be as early in September as possible. So any of the above dates (with prior notice) would be fine.
How does that fit in with the others?

Hope you don't mind a noob (well new to 20D) tagging along and asking lots of silly questions. Brighouse, car, three places.

You off on Holiday again Steve ? ;)

Ian, if you want to take a couple of days doing more photography around say the lakes or Yorkshire, providing you let me know the dates I would gladly tag along.

Not at all buddy. The whole idea is to allow us all to meet and put faces to names while sharing our mutual interest...the more the merrier :)
I think they're ok by me. I have a wedding on the 3rd then on the 10th so it breaks it up nicely :)
Thursday the 8th gets my vote.

Right, I've read the thread, and with all the idea's and possibles, what have we got so far ?
I might try and tag along on this one should I be able to get a flight. .... Ohhhh, might have me car back by then, hmmm, idea's idea's idea's.
I have a work engagement on the 8th in the evening but i have a cunning plan ! ;)
Sickie? :D
I couldnt possibly comment on that ;) LOL
Oooooh ! nobody mentioned this (http://www.chesterzoo.org/visitorinfo.asp?Page=106) yet ?

I can't do the 8th, i'm booked to go down to hendon to the RAF museum.
Ok so this is getting close enough that we need to pick a date that suits the majority..
two people have already said that the 8th is unsuitable, although another says the 8th would be best for him.
That leaves Tues 7th and Thursday 9th suitable..what’s that like for you folks?
Actually Wednesday the 7th and Friday the 9th mate ! :)
I will make myself available whichever day it is ! :)
Wed 7th, Thurs 8th or Fri 9th September.
That leaves Tues 7th and Thursday 9th suitable..what’s that like for you folks?
Whichever one is the Thursday is the best one. :)
7th or 9th is OK with us. Jan is off work then, so we should be good to go.
Whichever one is the Thursday is the best one. :)
That would be the 8th which is unsuitable for two others - can you not do either the Wed 7th OR Fri 9th?
It would be a shame to lose you but we have to make it the best day for the majority.
Obviously go with the majority. Once a date is set I will see what I can juggle :thumb:
I'll be up for this, I think, I should have a car to use on any of the early September dates mentioned, should be good to have another meet.
Rob
When this first came about I couldn't really get interested because I only had the kit lens, I knew that still this would be an invaluable trip, learning and listening to so many knowledgeable people all in one place. However if there are going to be some of you travelling further north ie. The Lakes or Yorkshire, if you wouldn't mind I could possibly be up for that. I'd love the chance to learn from some of the experienced on here. If not it's no problem and would hope to catch up with you on another occasion.

IanC_UK and myself are hoping to do a couple of days in the Lakes as well around this time if we can arrange it. I have no issues with you tagging along on those as long as you can meet up at set times places.
There is nothing arranged for sure yet but if/when I will pm you the details and you can see if its suits you.

Cheers Steve and apologies as I didn’t follow this thread very closely and didn’t realise that it was just the 2 of you. Also in the excitement I clean forgot, it’s the wife’s birthday on the 7th along with our wedding anniversary, so may not be possible. I really would like to catch up with you all sometime as I know it would be an opportunity to learn. As long as you both don’t mind, pm me nearer the time and I’ll see what the boss says.
Thanks again.
Ken.
No the Chester Zoo is for everyone but Ian and myself are hoping to extend the trip and spend a couple of days in the lakes as well ;)
Hopefully once Chester date is sorted the rest will fall into place Steve ! :)

Yes hopefully :)
After further discussion and deliberation (and since nobody will make a definitive choice ;) ) it has been decided that the date for the Group Chester Zoo day out will be WEDNESDAY 7th SEPTEMBER --EDIT NOW LOOKING LIKE FRIDAY 9th--
Everyone is welcome to attend regardless of their perceived skill or quality of equipment. The more the merrier and it will give everyone a chance to put faces to names and be totally shocked at how different we all are in real life. The only cravat is that you must be available to attend on this day, you can make your own way there (or arrange a shared lift) and you pay for your own entrance into the zoo. If you want food you will have to provide that too or buy it there ;)

The zoo is open from 10am till 5pm.
So we need a definitive list of who is available now.
I’ll start by adding my name, as you reply I will add it to the list below.
Steve
IanC_UK
Matt
CT and probably Jan ;)
Cripple (Sam)
I don't think I'm going to be able to make it , grrrr.
Normally my wife has every wednesday off, but she starts a new job on the 30th August, so will be working on Wednesdays now.
If I can ask my mum to look after the littlun as a one-off then I'll be there.
D'oh !
Not going to be able to do Wednesday now ! Going to be in Vienna Monday to Wednesday for work ! :(
:censored:

As Ian was one of the first to suggest and get invovled with this trip and most of the people didn't have any objections to either the Wednesday or the Friday..I propose we change the trip date to the Friday 9th if that doesn't effect any of the other people that have already confirmed their availability.
How does that sound and how does it affect everyone?
doesn't effect me, I'm still up for it
Doesn't affect me either, My wife's still working :p (Although she has an earlier finish on a friday so the babysitter will be sitting for less, which is always a selling point :D)
So if CT (and probably Jan) can make the Friday we are on a winner :)
Well CT, what do you say?
As this has changed to the friday I will be able to make it. I will be travelling from Biggin Hill (Kent) and was wandering if anyone needs a lift or would be able to give a lift from that sort of area? Don't really want to drive up on my own if I can help it.
Sam
Added your name to the list Sam :thumb:
Thanks guys :) i getting a warm feeling ! LOL
:)
Best change your pants before it dries.
LOL funny you should say that ! I not good with heights, and abseiled off a 100 ft bridge today !
Ouch. First and last time I went abseiling was in 1995.
I had just met my current wife, and I was petrified of heights, so to 'face my fear' I went with one of my wifes friends abseiling (with my wife watching the picnic).
First drop, about 80 foot.
I get about 50 foot down, fell the rest of the way through trees and what not poking out of the side.
Landed on my back, thought "well, that didn't hurt one bit!", ran up to the top for another go.
Burnt my left hand to buggery though. Was a big knot that had landed on a tree.
I got to it, left hand holding rope, right hand holding rope, me and big knot inbetween, with my teeth shifting bits about, all of a sudden, twang! knot came loose and I'm holding about 50 foot of rope inbetween each hand :p
Weeeeeeeee!!!!
(Not literally, I havent lost my bladder control yet!)
Yeah funny thing is i did it twice too ! was with a professional though, so no contact with trees ! lol
I loved it actually, only bit i was scared about really was the stepping onto the parapet ! LOL
I've dropped of a bridge in a canoe, and built my own death slide when I was a kid.
Does that qualify me into the stupid antics club?
I've stayed out late at night..once :whistling
Come on lads, lets stop all this willy waving

:nut: i wasnt naked abseiling !!!!! :stupid:

I might have been in the canoe:whistling
I'm petrified of heights and scared of flying. Hence I'm going to be jumping out of a plane from 10,000ft on bank holiday monday (fully clothed and with extra pair of underpants) :icon_eek:

Erm ! i scared now ! ;) LOL
I might not be able to make this because of work commitments.
I will try my utmost to make myself available, but its not looking good.
I won't be able to make it as i'm having my gall bladder removed on the 2nd \o/

good luck with that Pete, sounds horrid:Ponders:
Good luck with that Pete, I hope everything goes well and you are back taking photos again in no time.
Thanks guys :) It is annoying as I am missing out on gigs and local events, but I'm hoping that I'm able to go see the Southport Fireworks at the end of september. I really don't want to miss that.
Eeeeeeew! Good luck with that Pete.
All the best for the op, do a documentary of some of those nurses
Best of luck with the OP mate, my ex had her gall bladder out !
Matt, shame you wont be able to make the Friday, will you be free for the weekend ? Still planning on going to the lakes, and maybe Oulton i think it was on that Sunday !
Just a reminder to everyone..the day is fast approaching. We are still welcoming everyone that would like to attend..the more the merrier :)
Don't forget that this is definately hapening this comming Friday...thats the 9th
Any news from work Matt, hopefully we will see you there?
Marcel have you got a baby sitter sorted yet?
Anyone else like to join us? Come on, the more the merrier and I have it on good authority that CT is buying the beer ;)
We need to start thinking about what time/where we're going to meet up. The zoo opens at 10am. :)
I have never been mate, are there crowds waiting at opening time? it would be better if we get a good start so maybe meet there a little before opening so we can all say hello and then get down to the serious stuff before the big rush??
I doubt there'll be crowds Steve, but I dunno, we got there well after 11am last time. As you turn into the signposted zoo access road from the main road, you'll see a car park on your left which is actually a car park for buses running a shuttle service between there and Chester and is actually nothing to do with the zoo. If you park there it's Pay and Display and you'll still have a fair old walk to the zoo itself.
You need to go straight on past that car park some way till you see the zoo on your right and the car park on your left.
The zoo is a big sprawling place. It's all pretty much on the flat, but there's a lot of retracing your steps involved to get round it all, and it was unbearably hot on my last visit. I carted a heavy bag of gear around last time and the 100-400L never came off the camera so I'll be travelling a lot lighter this time.;)
So what are you suggesting?
I am presuming that it will get busier as the day goes on so even if its not a full day (maybe it is?) then it will be quieter in the morning anyway, plus there light will be softer ;) That should make it better for getting access and for capturing the best phots.
Meet on the main (official) Chester Zoo car park at about 9.30 and travel light as there is lots of walking involved?
Meet on the main (official) Chester Zoo car park at about 9.30 and travel light as there is lots of walking involved?
9.30am sounds like a good plan Steve. :) I'd hate anyone to curse me if they felt that they hadn't enough gear, but I'll be carrying as little kit as possible due my experience last time, but in fairness it was hot as Hell that day.
In fact I'm just off to Jessops to see what they have in the way of small light backpack type bags, which will be easier to carry, and keep the gear dry if it rains.(hope not obviously)
Haven't secured a babysitter yet, but I'm working on it, I should hopefully know by this evening.
The plan that I told you about the other day isn't as ideal as I'd hoped :(
There's only a very small handful of people we will let look after the littleun, so it narrows the chances somewhat :( Unfortunately, thats the way it goes.

I'll drop you a PM buddy ;)
Babysitter now sorted for Friday :)
I won't be able to make it for 9:30am though, as I have to take my daughter to school first, then pick the babysitter up to bring her back to my house :).
Realistically looking at about 10:30 arrival, so I'll have to take someones mobile number and catch you all up.
Thats great news mate :)
I will be travelling down with Ian on Friday and as my mobile is goosed :( I will ask Ian if he doesn't mind letting you have his number so that you can give us a shout when you arrive.
Matt - any update on the work situation, is it looking like you will be able to make it?
I've managed to get Thursday night off, so I can make it.
I do have to work on Friday night though, so it looks like its going to be a long one.
Are you passing me on the way?

I'll catch you on msn on Thursday evening or drop you a pm to let you know what time as soon as Ian and I have got it sorted :)
I have been on a couple of occasions to Chester zoo.
I suggest you take a long lens for outdoor photography, and a short lens for inside the reptile house and aquarium house, thats if you fancy getting shots of the snakes, frogs and fish.
Sounds like your all going to have a good time together. Wish I could tag along somehow. Have fun and be sure to take a group shot to mark the event for the forums! I want to see all your pearly whites now. :)

Sounds like a great idea, although I myself would not be intrested in Chester Zoo.
For the right location I would be willing to travel and can offer a lifts from the West Yroks area for up to three people.
All sounds good, just to confirm i'll still be making my way, so if anyone needs a lift from the Biggin Hill, Kent or somewhere along the way just let us know.
See you there about 9:30 :)

Nah I think we need to shepherd him towards them ;)
Back now, and no one else has posted. Matt should have been home first I think.
A thoroughly enjoyable day was had by myself, was a real pleasure meeting you all. Definately looking forward to doing it again sometime.
For everyone else, it rained until about 1:30pm (ish), and stopped not long after we ventured back outside after lunch and a cuppa.
Many many opportunities to shoot the backend of the animals, and some of them just didn't want to play ball. Nevertheless some of them did want to be photographed, and I think a good number of decent shots was taken between us all.
The orangutans being the most photogenic of the day I think, so expect to see alot of those being posted on the forums in the next few days :)
As already said, it was great to meet you all and put people and faces to the usernames. Shame I didn't have that bloody shave I'd planned before leaving the house this morning :p, it was really annoying me.
Jolly good show :)

Back now ourselves, called at Salford Quays on the way home to catch the sunset and some architecture. Just about to put the feet up with a beer and browse todays efforts :)
I think everyone enjoyed the day and has already been said some good photos by us all. It was great to see the ones that turned up and a very special mention must go out to Sam (Cripple) who travelled all the way from the far side of London to Chester for the day. Thats some dedication by any standard
It was nice to meet CT and Jan as well, overall the day was a great success and hopefully something similar can be planned for the future.
Just got in myself, have to say was a great day, am going to put off going through photo's till tomorrow as have had almost the worst car journey coming home.
Started off with an accident on the M6 stuck there for quite a while, then once I had hit the M6 Toll road thought everything was going to be good nice clear roads until the torrential rain and thunderstorms hit in just before Oxford. Couldn't see for sh!t out the car and had to endure it for about 30 odd miles @ 30 miles per hour. :(
All being said though I have seen all types of weather today apart from snow and hail including a very nice sunset, sadly didn't manage to get a pic of it......bit hard on the motorway when you're on the motorway when i am supposed to be driving.
Defiantly looking forward to the next meet! :D
I am glad everyone enjoyed the day and have managed to get home safely :)
Again thanks to all that attended and made the day so enjoyable
We enjoyed ourselves! :D Great day - and thanks to everybody who made it good fun despite the weather! :thumb:
