Light this morning was as bad as it gets, wide open, the 5.6 400L was metering at 1/10th of a second, pointing at the brightest part of the scene.... the sky.
OK, I thought, just for the hell of it, I'll put the flash on. Subject was 20m away! 580EX on full power :woot:
Result - judge for yourself.

I really like this!
I rarely use flash for bird photography, and when I do I usually reduce power by about 1-2 stops so it's just a fill to brighten the shadows. I think natural light always looks better anyway. You have just a touch of red eye Doug which gives the game away a bit but it's not bad at all. :)
As well as red eye you can get 'steel eye' which is when the eye takes on a luminous blue/grey shine.

It was flash or nothing CT.... It was worth a try:D
It's a good shot, even with the flash and the bad light.... some of us struggle to get a shot like that in A1 light
I feel sorry for the one blinded Goldfinch flying around though....

I'm never afraid to increase the ISO - I've posted pictures here taken at 3200!
Light was just impossible this morning, and given the distance, anything over 1000 would have been poo:D

I'm expecting to see a photo tomorrow of the Goldie with a white stick...

For sure but you used ISO 200.
A setting of around ISO 800 would still have produced a good balance between shutter speed and noise.
